Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz<\/strong><\/a> was in tears on Sunday, December 7, as he was carted off the field with a devastating knee injury.<\/p>\n

Head coach Dan Quinn<\/strong> confirmed on Monday that Ertz, 35, sustained a torn ACL, marking the end of his 2025 season. As a free agent at the end of the season with a lengthy recovery on the way, the injury may have also been a career-ender for the three-time Pro Bowler.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has meant a lot to our team, both on and off the field,\u201d said Quinn, 55, according to The Athletic<\/em><\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s been an ideal teammate to help set a standard about habits, and so we\u2019re all bummed for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ertz sustained the injury in the third quarter of Washington\u2019s 31-0 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 14. It happened as he leapt to catch a pass and Vikings safety Jay Ward<\/strong> ran into Ertz\u2019s right leg. Ertz flipped and hit the ground hard, immediately grabbing for his knee.<\/p>\n

Cameras showed him crying as he was loaded onto the cart, with teammate Marcus Mariota<\/strong><\/a> doing his best<\/a> to console him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI ain\u2019t going to lie; it was tough for everybody,\u201d wide receiver Terry McLaurin<\/strong> said after the game, according to ESPN. \u201cHe\u2019s one of the linchpins of our team.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt breaks my heart when you see a great one like him, an all-time great [get hurt],\u201d tight end John Bates<\/strong> added.<\/p>\n

The injury also came with some controversy, as fans and media alike called out Ward, 25, for what they perceived to be a dirty hit. The NFL has not handed down any punishment for Ward as of Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n
