Meghan Markle<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s estranged father, Thomas Markle<\/strong><\/a>, underwent surgery to have his left leg amputated below the knee.<\/p>\n

Thomas\u2019 son, Thomas Markle Jr.,<\/strong> confirmed to the Daily Mail<\/em><\/a> on Friday, December 5, that the former Hollywood lighting director went under the knife on Wednesday, December 3, in the Philippines.<\/p>\n

According to Thomas Jr., the elder Thomas, 81, underwent surgery after a blood clot cut off circulation to his left leg, causing the limb to turn black.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy dad is being very brave. His foot turned blue and then black. It happened very quickly. I took him to a local hospital and they did some scans and an ultrasound and said the leg had to be amputated,\u201d said Thomas Jr.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMeghan Markle has had a difficult relationship with her father, Thomas Markle Sr., ever since her courtship with Prince Harry began. The Suits actress, 44, is the only child from the former General Hospital lighting director\u2019s eight-year marriage to Doria Ragland \u2014 though he also shares a son, Thomas Markle Jr., and a daughter, Samantha [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThere was no option. I was told the leg had to be removed and it was a case of life or death,\u201d Thomas Jr. added.<\/p>\n

Thomas Jr., 59, said that his father is now expected to undergo further surgery to remove a blood clot in his left thigh, telling the Daily Mail<\/em> that doctors are \u201cextremely concerned\u201d about the Duchess of Sussex\u2019s father\u2019s health.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of his doctors said the next two or three days are critical. His left leg has been removed below the knee. They were worried about infection setting in \u2014 sepsis or gangrene. The flesh was black and dying,\u201d Thomas Jr. said.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cThere was no option given. It was either, \u2018We have to operate now and remove the leg, or he may die.\u2019 It was a life-threatening situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Daily Mail<\/em> reported on Tuesday, December 2, that Thomas was hospitalized in intensive care<\/a> in Cebu in the Philippines following an undisclosed illness.<\/p>\n

\u201cI took dad to a hospital close to our home and they did various scans and the doctors said his life was in imminent danger,\u201d Thomas Jr. told the outlet on Wednesday. \u201cThey raced us by ambulance, with the sirens going, to a much bigger hospital in the center of the city.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cMy dad has undergone emergency surgery. I would ask everyone around the world to keep him in their thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is a strong man, but he has been through so much. I am praying that he is strong enough to survive this,\u201d Thomas\u2019 daughter, Samantha<\/strong>, 61, told the Daily Mail<\/em>. \u201cMy father has been through two heart attacks, a stroke and an earthquake. I hope he can pull through this.\u201d<\/p>\n
