Charlie Puth<\/strong><\/a> clapped back at a Fox News commentator who criticized the NFL for its choice to have the singer perform \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner\u201d at this year\u2019s Super Bowl.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After it was announced on Sunday, November 30, that Puth, 33, would open the big game with America\u2019s National Anthem in February, Link Lauren<\/strong>, a political pundit, took to social media to voice his distaste for the decision.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMan we\u2019ve fallen from when Whitney Houston<\/strong> sang at the Super Bowl,\u201d Lauren griped via X<\/span><\/a> on Monday, December 1. \u201cCharlie Puth? He\u2019s not gonna give us vocals I\u2019m afraid.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Puth reposted Lauren\u2019s critique, adding commentary of his own.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll never claim to be as good of a singer as Whitney Houston ever was,\u201d he wrote<\/span><\/a> on the platform. \u201cBut I assure you we\u2019re putting a really special arrangement together- in D major. It\u2019ll be one of my best vocal performances.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Responding to Puth, Lauren tempered his negative tone, writing, <\/span>\u201cCan\u2019t wait. I wish you nothing but success, but just miss our big belting divas like Whitney. What an era. Make sure they know it\u2019s D major and not b minor. Cheers Char!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Puth\u2019s confidence in the face of criticism is earned. The New Jersey-born singer has been nominated for three Grammy Awards, including Best Song of the Year, in 2016 for \u201cSee You Again,\u201d his collaboration with Wiz Khalifa<\/strong>. His other hit songs include \u201cAttention\u201d and \u201cWe Don\u2019t Talk Anymore.\u201d He also produced and wrote \u201cStay\u201d for Justin Bieber<\/strong> and The Kid Laroi<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the Puth announcement, Roc Nation \u2014\u00a0the NFL\u2019s music partner \u2014\u00a0also revealed that Brandi Carlile<\/strong> and Coco Jones<\/strong> will perform ahead of Super Bowl LX at Levi\u2019s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Carlile, 44, will croon \u201cAmerica the Beautiful\u201d while Jones, 27, will take the mic for \u201cLift Every Voice and Sing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Puth marked the achievement via Instagram the same day and shared a funny video of himself, in football coach mode, explaining the vocal technique required to take on the National Anthem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t believe I\u2019m saying this\u2026 I will be performing the National Anthem at Super Bowl LX,\u201d he captioned the clip<\/span><\/a>, in which he asks, \u201cDid you know that one of the most beautiful pieces of music also happens to be one of the hardest to sing?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Puth\u2019s fans went crazy in the comments section, with one follower referencing a lyric from Taylor Swift\u2019s The Tortured Poets Department<\/em> album.<\/span><\/p>\n
