Rossif Sutherland<\/strong> called the idea of casting someone to play his dad<\/a> on Murder in a Small Town<\/em> \u201ctricky\u201d after wishing his father, Donald Sutherland<\/strong><\/a>, got the chance before his death.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always have the beautiful reality of being able to think of my own dad as the person who would play my dad,\u201d Rossif, 47, who plays Karl, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> about who he would have cast<\/a> on the Fox show. \u201cHe has [played my dad on screen] in the past \u2014 and he probably would have loved to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rossif doesn\u2019t have anyone specific in mind now.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have no idea. I would like somebody who is tall \u2014 just so that I could look him in the eye. I imagine this character to be not a weak [and] not a broken man. I see him as surprisingly quite strong and put together,\u201d the actor noted. \u201cBut he just made choices that Karl disagrees with. So they should be able to look at each other straight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Based on novels written by L.R. Wright<\/strong>, Murder in a Small Town<\/em> follows a police chief named Karl (Sutherland) who \u2014 along with the help of others<\/a>, including his girlfriend, Cassandra (Kreuk) \u2014 investigates mysterious murders. Season 1 featured guest appearances from James Cromwell, Stana Katic, Devon Sawa, Paula Patton<\/strong> and Noah Reid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rossif previously spoke about his father\u2019s interest in bringing the books to life<\/a> before his death in June 2024 at age 88.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe weird thing is that my father was tied to this 30 years ago. It\u2019s a little surreal, really \u2014 serendipitous I guess,\u201d he told Us<\/em> in September 2024. \u201cBut here I am telling a story that my father would\u2019ve told 30 years ago. I don\u2019t know that I\u2019m following in his footsteps, but I love the man and I miss him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rossif continued: \u201cI think of [my dad] every day. And my beautiful mother that I love and adore, I hope she watches this. I hope this brings her joy \u2026 one day at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n

After filming two seasons of Murder in a Small Town<\/em> \u2014 so far \u2014 Rossif has found his groove<\/a> as lovable police chief Karl.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a charm to those [small town] environments. Of course it is idyllic but there is telling a story within a context like that. The community is small so you actually get to know who everybody is,\u201d he noted. \u201cThat\u2019s another thing that we were trying to do. If we get to do this again, we would do it even more. It is very much about all these characters that make this place a home. It\u2019s a home that absurdly has become a bit of a murder capital but there has to be a reason why people stay. That\u2019s because they have each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rossif highlighted his love for the message behind the show.<\/a><\/p>\n
