Eric Dane<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s Brilliant Minds<\/em> role pulled from his actual life as his character learned to lean on his family amid a deteriorating battle with ALS.<\/a><\/p>\n

During the Monday, November 24, episode of the NBC series, Dane, 53, played a patient named Matthew<\/a>, who struggles as his ALS progresses and his symptoms make day-to-day life more difficult. Matthew initially refused to tell his ex-wife and daughter what was going on, though he eventually revealed he was struggling.<\/p>\n

After denying the changes he would have to make to adjust to his health issues, Matthew chose to move back in with his family. He acknowledged that he couldn\u2019t face his struggles<\/a> without his loved ones by his side.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe act of rescue is often linked to things like heroism and bravery. But for guys like me, I\u2019ve always looked at it as an act of caring,\u201d Eric\u2019s character said in an emotional voiceover. \u201cI guess I never saw myself as the one who needed to be cared for.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tEric Dane has been candid about his health over the years, including his recent ALS diagnosis. The Grey\u2019s Anatomy and Charmed alum announced the news of his diagnosis on Thursday, April 10, in a statement to People. \u201cI have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Matthew noted that he needed to shift his perspective.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cBut I know now that even on my hardest of days, you and your mom will be there to save me from many fires that may come our way,\u201d he continued. \u201cSometimes the most heroic thing you can do isn\u2019t running into the burning building. It\u2019s quieter, smaller but in a way harder \u2014 at least for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cLetting you and your mother in, accepting help, agreeing to this voice banking business that Dr. Pierce has been talking about [is] allowing myself to be rescued \u2014 even when I don\u2019t want to. For me, this is the bravest thing I\u2019ve ever done. And it\u2019s scary as hell. But it is worth it if it means more time with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dane\u2019s role on Brilliant Minds<\/em><\/a> is his latest as he continues to battle ALS. He is also set to reprise Cal on Euphoria<\/em>, played Blythe on Countdown<\/em> and will appear in the upcoming series Kabul<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been diagnosed with ALS,\u201d Dane said in an April statement. \u201cI am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter. I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dane recalled when he originally noticed symptoms of the illness<\/a> that causes muscle control while affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started experiencing some weakness in my right hand. And I didn\u2019t really think anything of it at the time, I thought maybe I\u2019d been texting too much and my hand was fatigued,\u201d Dane explained on Good Morning America<\/em> in June. \u201cA few weeks later, I noticed it\u2019d gotten a little worse. I went and saw a hand specialist, who sent me to another hand specialist. I went and saw a neurologist, and the neurologist sent me to another neurologist and said, \u2018This is way above my pay grade.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tFrom Lou Gehrig in 1939 to Eric Dane in 2025, celebrities have publicly dealt with what is now known as ALS for decades. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig\u2019s Disease, is a terminal neurodegenerative disorder. The disease causes the individual to gradually lose control of their muscles, beginning gradually with muscle stiffness or [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dane waited nearly a year to receive his diagnosis<\/a>. \u201cI will never forget those three letters, [ALS]. It\u2019s on me the second I wake up,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dane continued: \u201cI have one functioning arm. \u2026 My left side is functioning. My right side, [which is my dominant side], has completely stopped working. [My left arm] is going. I feel like maybe a couple, a few more months and I won\u2019t have my left. \u2026 I\u2019m worried about my legs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor said he felt \u201cangry\u201d about dealing with the condition. \u201cVery. I\u2019m angry because my father was taken from me when I was young. And now there\u2019s a very good chance that I\u2019ll be taken from my girls when they\u2019re very young,\u201d he explained, referring to his daughters with Rebecca Gayheart. \u201cI mean, I really, at the end of the day, all I want is to just spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can.\u201d<\/p>\n
