Jimmy Cliff, the reggae musician who became an icon of the genre during his many years of performing, has passed away at the age of 81.<\/p>\n

I am thankful for his family, friends, fellow artists, and coworkers who have shared his journey with him,\u201d Chambers wrote on Instagram Monday morning.<\/p>\n
The music icon reportedly passed away in his native Jamaica.<\/p>\n
Cliff had several hit singles over the course of his career, including \u201cMany Rivers to Cross\u201d and \u201cThe Harder They Come,\u201d the title track from the 1972 film in which he starred.<\/p>\n

(Photo by Cindy Ord\/Getty Images)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIn addition to his original songs, Cliff scored hits with several covers, including \u201cHakuna Matata\u201d, Cat Stevens\u2019s \u201cWild World\u201d and Johnny Nash\u2019s \u201cI Can See Clearly Now,\u201d which was featured on the soundtrack of the film Cool Runnings<\/em>.<\/p>\nHe was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.<\/p>\n
News of Cliff\u2019s passing made him an instant trending topic across social media, as family, friends, and a legion of adoring fans rushed to pay tribute.<\/p>\n
