\t\t<\/p>\n Lupita Nyong\u2019o<\/strong><\/a> is bringing attention to a matter with casting. <\/p>\n The 42-year-old actress opened up in a recent interview about the roles she was being offered after she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2014 for her work in 12 Years a Slave<\/em>, which also won Best Picture and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) that year. <\/p>\n Keep reading to find out more\u2026<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt really did set the paces for everything I\u2019ve done since,\u201d she shared with musician Ang\u00e9lique Kidjo<\/strong> during a recent interview on CNN Inside Africa<\/a><\/em>. \u201cBut you know what\u2019s interesting is that, after I won that Academy Award, you\u2019d think, \u2018Oh, I\u2019m gonna get lead roles here and there.\u2019 [Instead, it was], \u2018Oh, Lupita<\/strong>, we\u2019d like you to play another movie where you\u2019re a slave, but this time you\u2019re on a slave ship.\u2019 Those are the kind of offers I was getting in the months after winning my Academy Award.\u201d<\/p>\n She said it was a \u201cvery tender time\u201d and she had to ignore headlines that would extrapolate her Hollywood trajectory. <\/p>\n \u201cThere were think pieces about: \u2018Is this the beginning and end of this dark-skinned Black African woman\u2019s career?\u2019\u201d Lupita<\/strong> said. \u201cI had to deafen myself to all those pontificators because, at the end of the day, I\u2019m not a theory; I\u2019m an actual person.\u201d<\/p>\n The actress adds that she hopes to broaden the horizons for African storytelling in the industry. <\/p>\n \u201cI like to be a joyful warrior for changing the paradigms of what it means to be African,\u201d she said. \u201cIf that means that I work one job less a year to ensure that I\u2019m not perpetuating the stereotypes that are expected of people from my continent, then let me do that.\u201d<\/p>\n Another Black actress who has been vocal about finding work after winning an Oscar \u2013 Halle Berry<\/strong><\/a>, who has called out The Academy for still not having another<\/a> Black Best Actress winner since her. <\/p>\n If you didn\u2019t know, Lupita<\/strong> is set to star in Christopher Nolan<\/strong>\u2018s next<\/a> star-studded movie!<\/p>\n <\/span><\/p><\/div>\n
