The video doorbell wouldn\u2019t be available generally but instead comes to a smart home market for multifamily buildings that could benefit from a retail smart lock maker moving into the space. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Our initial impression was that it could provide camera shared by an apartment building\u2019s residents, but Level says that\u2019s not so, with the system designed to put them on individual units.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Level says residents can use the Level app to peer through the doorbell camera and speak with visitors on the other side. The press release adds that the camera includes \u201cpackage identification intelligence\u201d to notify residents when deliveries have arrived. Assuming the company brings the same level of creativity to its doorbell camera that it did the Level Bolt \u2014 its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23393163\/best-smart-door-lock#:~:text=The%20Level%20Bolt%20is%20completely%20invisible\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cinvisible\u201d smart lock<\/a> that tucks all of its smart guts into the deadbolt itself \u2014 the Level video doorbell could bring sophistication that\u2019s otherwise lacking in this market.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">In an email to <em>The Verge,<\/em> Level\u2019s chief revenue officer Ned Murphy said the camera will be compatible with locks found in Level\u2019s multifamily catalog, and that users will be able to toggle their door locks from the video call interface.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Although, as we pointed out at the 2016 debut of competitor Latch, systems like this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2016\/2\/10\/10956924\/latch-smart-lock-announced-funding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can have privacy issues<\/a>, such as that company\u2019s requirement that its locks keep usage logs that landlords can potentially review.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The release touches on privacy but only barely, saying the doorbell camera will be accessible from the Level app \u201cwhile being mindful of neighbor privacy and owner liability.\u201d It\u2019s not clear what that means, though. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">We asked Level for more detail, and in an email to <em>The Verge,<\/em> Murphy said Level stores 20-second video clips for 72 hours, but does not allow residents to record and store videos beyond that. Package detection, Murphy said, will notify all residents within a unit when a package is found, which includes anyone on the lease for a given unit. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">How does the doorbell notify the correct resident about guests? What does \u201cpackage identification intelligence\u201d mean; are all residents notified when a delivery arrives, or can the delivery person somehow prompt the system only to tell the addressee? Dwelo, much like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/5\/16\/23725963\/jamie-siminoff-ring-amazon-latch-ceo-smart-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enterprise smart home company Latch<\/a>, offers a smart home system for apartment buildings and landlords that gives control of basic preconfigured smart home devices to residents that building owners own. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">As for whether this platform is an extension of Dwelo\u2019s, Murphy writes it is not \u2014 the platform it launched today is \u201centirely new, designed and engineered by Level.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Level CEO and co-founder John Martin is quoted in the press release:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"duet--article--blockquote ewrhy32 ewrhy30\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy35 ewrhy33\">\u201cFirst-generation smart apartment platforms lack the quality and reliability that building owners and operators should come to expect.
