An unbreakable bond. Tallulah Willis<\/strong><\/a> opened up about her father Bruce Willis<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 dementia battle and shared that he still recognizes her.<\/p>\n \u201cHe still knows who I am and lights up when I enter the room,\u201d Tallulah, 29, penned in a Wednesday, May 31, personal essay for Vogue<\/em><\/a>. The Idaho native and her family \u2014 mom Demi Moore<\/strong><\/a>, sisters Rumer Willis<\/strong><\/a> and Scout Willis<\/strong><\/a>, stepmom Emma Heming<\/strong><\/a> and half-sisters Mabel, 11, and Evelyn, 8 \u2014 announced in March 2022 that Bruce, 68, had been diagnosed with aphasia<\/a>.<\/p>\n In February, Moore, 60 \u2014 who was married to<\/a> the Sixth Sense<\/em> star from 1987 to 2000 \u2014 revealed that the actor had received the \u201cmore specific diagnosis\u201d of frontotemporal dementia<\/a> (FTD). \u201cToday there are no treatments for the disease, a reality that we hope can change in the years ahead,\u201d the Indecent Proposa<\/em>l actress wrote in a statement via the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD)<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n Although Bruce\u2019s loved ones disclosed his condition just last year, Tallulah wrote that she knew \u201csomething was wrong for a long time.\u201d She continued: \u201cIt started out with a kind of vague unresponsiveness, which the family chalked up to Hollywood hearing loss: \u2018Speak up! Die Hard<\/em> messed with Dad\u2019s ears.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n The child actor admitted to taking the changes personally at first, fearing that her father was simply preoccupied with Heming, 44 \u2014 whom he wed in 2009<\/a> \u2014 and their two daughters.<\/p>\n \u201cLater that unresponsiveness broadened, and I sometimes took it personally. He had had two babies with my stepmother, Emma Heming Willis, and I thought he\u2019d lost interest in me,\u201d she recalled. \u201cThough this couldn\u2019t have been further from the truth, my adolescent brain tortured itself with some faulty math: I\u2019m not beautiful enough for my mother, I\u2019m not interesting enough for my father.\u201d<\/p>\n Although Tallulah once handled her dad\u2019s health struggles<\/a> with \u201cavoidance and denial,\u201d she\u2019s reached a point where she cherishes every moment with the Moonlighting<\/em> alum.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the past I was so afraid of being destroyed by sadness, but finally I feel that I can show up and be relied upon. I can savor that time, hold my dad\u2019s hand and feel that it\u2019s wonderful,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n The Wyllis founder noted that she now takes \u201ctons of photos\u201d each time she visits her father\u2019s house. \u201cI\u2019m like an archaeologist, searching for treasure in stuff that I never used to pay much attention to. I have every voicemail from him saved on a hard drive. I find that I\u2019m trying to document, to build a record for the day when he isn\u2019t there to remind me of him and of us,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n In addition to her candor about navigating Bruce\u2019s declining health, Tallulah opened up about her family sending her to Driftwood Recovery, a Texas rehabilitation center, in June 2022 amid her battle with anorexia<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI was introduced to a variety of therapies, my medication was retooled, and I was given a new diagnosis<\/a>: Borderline Personality Disorder, an illness that impairs the ability to regulate emotions and find stability in relationships,\u201d she shared, adding that the experience helped her realize that she \u201cwanted more harmony with [her] body\u201d and to \u201cbring a levity to my sisters and my parents.\u201d<\/p>\n Tallulah wrapped up the essay by expressing her gratitude for her family, including her niece, Louetta, whom Rumer, 34, welcomed in April<\/a> with partner Derek Thomas<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
