Jay Leno<\/a> has made a conscious decision to stay away from politics.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Jay Leno steers clear of political issues<\/p>\n
The 75-year-old star has revealed that his stand-up comedy career profited from his decision to steer clear of political opinions, explaining that his ticket sales surged by as much as 30 percent when he changed his act.<\/p>\n
During an appearance on the Today show, Jay shared: “I took politics out of it.<\/p>\n
“I noticed ticket sales are up 20 to 30 percent just because nobody wants to be lectured.”<\/p>\n
On the other hand, Jay suggested that other comedians have adopted a different approach.<\/p>\n
\nHe said: “When you\u2019re on TV and you can play directly to your audience and there\u2019s a laugh track.<\/p>\n
\n“When you go to Indiana or Kentucky or any other place in the country, you\u2019re always going to have a third of the people who don\u2019t agree with you politically, so why even go there?”<\/p>\n
\nJay previously acknowledged that he’s been fortunate that he’s never really had to follow a traditional work schedule.<\/p>\n
\nThe comedy star – who hosted The Tonight Show between 1992 and 2009 – explained: “I’m just not a big sleeper.<\/p>\n
\n“I suppose if I had a real job where I had to work hard, I’d be more exhausted. So that’s probably what it is.”<\/p>\n
\nBut prior to that, Jay claimed that he worked twice as hard as his comedy rivals.<\/p>\n
\nThe TV star was diagnosed with dyslexia as a child, and having the learning difficulty has actually shaped his approach to life.<\/p>\n
\nJay told CNBC in 2016: “My mother always said to me, since I was dyslexic, \u2018You\u2019re going to have to work twice as hard as the other kids to get the same thing.\u2019 I said, \u2018OK. That seems fair.\u2019 And I did work twice as hard to get the same thing.<\/p>\n
\n“I remember going to the comedy clubs and people would line up at 6.00pm for auditions to get a spot at midnight. By 9:00pm guys would go, \u2018I\u2019m not waiting in line.\u2019 They would leave and then I would move on up.”<\/p>\n
