If Sofia Coppola<\/strong> were to make a film about her life in 2025, she might title it Everything Everywhere All at Once.<\/em> Twenty-five years after making her feature directorial debut with The<\/em> Virgin Suicides,<\/em> the filmmaker has premiered her first documentary<\/a>, Marc by Sofia,<\/em> about her longtime friend Marc Jacobs;<\/strong> kicked off her recurring screening series at the newly reopened West Village hub that is the Cherry Lane Theatre; launched a book tour for her late mother Eleanor Coppola\u2019s posthumous memoir<\/a>, Two of Me: Notes on Living and Leaving;<\/em> and been thanked in the credits for both Celine Song<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s and Kristen Stewart<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s latest films. Coppola had an opportunity to take a victory lap at the Museum of Modern Art\u2019s 17th annual Film Benefit, presented by Chanel, where she was this year\u2019s honoree\u2014putting Coppola in the company of past recipients and fellow auteurs Baz Luhrmann, Tim Burton,<\/strong> Pedro Almod\u00f3var,<\/strong> Quentin Tarantino, Kathryn Bigelow,<\/strong> and Guillermo del Toro.<\/strong> \u201cI couldn\u2019t believe it when they asked,\u201d Coppola told Vanity Fair<\/em> shortly before the event on Wednesday. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to pause and be like, Oh wow, I have a body of work.\u201d<\/p>\n And what a body of work it is: Coppola won the Academy Award for best original screenplay with Lost in Translation<\/em> and landed famed costume designer Milena Canonero<\/strong> an Oscar for her now cult classic Marie Antoinette.<\/em> Coppola even sought to change the perception of how female filmmakers are supposed to look: \u201cThe women directors who I was growing up with were like Penny Marshall, who is cool and great, but they always dressed kind of like guys,\u201d Coppola said. \u201cThey weren\u2019t feminine. I always made a point [to show that] I like clothes. You don\u2019t have to all be in polo sleeves to be a director and work a camera, but also you do have to be practical on set.\u201d<\/p>\n During the Film Benefit ceremony, held November 12 at the museum, Elle Fanning,<\/strong> star of Coppola\u2019s Somewhere<\/em> and The Beguiled,<\/em> ably summarized the director\u2019s legacy: Coppola has forever changed how \u201cgirlhood\u201d is depicted in film. She spoke movingly about watching Coppola\u2019s third feature, Marie Antoinette,<\/em> in theaters: \u201cLiving in that cinema\u2014in Sofia\u2019s world\u2014for a few hours, it would change my girlhood forever,\u201d the actor and Coppola muse said. \u201cIt was a place I felt safe and seen, and I wanted to live in it 100 times over. I never knew that something could look so beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n Marc by Sofia<\/em> lead producer Jane Cha Cutler<\/strong> echoed to VF<\/em> that Coppola is a revolutionary due to her keen eye. \u201cShe\u2019s very tapped into that inner teenage girl in many of us\u2014that in-betweenness of innocence and knowingness, the insecurity, the tenuousness, the excitement at becoming or experimenting at who you\u2019re going to be,\u201d Cutler said. \u201cThere\u2019s a reason so many young people line up for Sofia\u2019s book signings and love her films so much\u2014they feel fresh and new, never stodgy or didactic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
