That restriction will remain in place Thursday, fueling hundreds of flight cancellations.<\/p>\n<p>However, in an encouraging sign late Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Transportation said it would not <em>expand<\/em> those restrictions. ANDREW CABALLERO-REYNOLDS\/AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Those limitations were meant to ease the burden on air traffic controllers, who called out of work in large numbers last weekend after weeks without a paycheck.<\/p>\n<h3>Air traffic controller staffing<\/h3>\n<p>How soon can airlines return to a full schedule? &#8220;It depends on controllers coming back,&#8221; Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/government-shutdown-real-disruption-trump-administration\/#:~:text=What%20happens%20when%20the%20government%20reopens%3F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Things seem to be headed in the right direction. On both Tuesday and Wednesday this week, the FAA reported just a small handful of &#8220;staffing triggers&#8221; at air traffic control facilities. Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2025\/11\/12\/delta-ceo-there-was-a-safety-risk-behind-faa-mandated-flight-reductions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Wednesday on CNBC.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">What passengers should expect<\/h2>\n<p>In the coming days, I expect you&#8217;ll start to see airlines winding down <a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/airlines-flight-cancellations-faa-shutdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flexible travel waivers<\/a> they put in place during the shutdown, which gave travelers more freedom to change their tickets or cancel and get a refund.<\/p>\n<p>How long those lenient policies last will likely depend on how long the FAA&#8217;s flight restrictions remain in place.<\/p>\n<p>As for travelers with Thanksgiving trips booked, let&#8217;s run down a few other quick-hit tips:<\/p>\n<h3>Able to change? Fly in the morning<\/h3>\n<p>If your ticket allows changes and you have some flexibility, I&#8217;d aim to fly first thing in the morning, if possible. Fly early, look for longer connection times. But also, a lot of it is, too, your attitude.
