University of North Carolina football coach Bill Belichick<\/strong><\/a> was blunt in addressing speculation he\u2019s interested in the New York Giants<\/a> head coaching job.<\/p>\n

When asked what his message was to his team amid the rumors in a Tuesday, November 12, press conference<\/a>, Belichick, 73, replied, \u201cGetting ready for Wake Forest, that\u2019s all I got this week.\u201d (The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are the Tar Heels\u2019 next opponent in a game scheduled for Saturday. November 15.)<\/p>\n

The Giants job opened on Monday, November 10, when the organization fired Brian Dabol<\/strong>l, who was in his fourth season at the helm. Daboll, 50, had a 20-40-1 record in New York and was just 2-8 so far in 2025. The Giants have not made the playoffs since his first season.<\/p>\n

Belichick, for his part, is arguably the most accomplished coach in NFL history, having won six Super Bowls as head coach of the New England Patriots and an additional two as an assistant. He became head coach of the Tar Heels in 2024 after the university fired Mack Brown<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe University of North Carolina has released Bill Belichick\u2019s head coaching salary and additional details of the contract. UNC publicly shared the legal agreement on Thursday, January 23, after Belichick, 72, officially signed on the dotted line. His contract is a five-year deal that includes a $10 million annual salary. \u201cI\u2019ve been asked about it from time to time,\u201d Belichick later added during Tuesday\u2019s press conference. \u201cLook I\u2019ve been down this road before. I\u2019m focused on Wake Forest, that\u2019s it. That\u2019s my commitment to this team. This week it\u2019s Wake Forest, next week it\u2019s that opponent and so forth. I\u2019m here to do the best for this team.\u201d<\/p>\n

With Belichick seemingly uninterested in publicly entertaining the thought of coaching the Giants, all eyes now turn to Giants assistant head coach and offensive coordinator, Mike Kafka<\/strong>, who will serve as interim head coach.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise,\u201d president John Mara<\/strong> and chairman Steve Tisch<\/strong> said in a joint statement<\/a> announcing the coaching change. \u201cWe understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for North Carolina, the Tar Heels are just 4-5 on the season but have won their last two games. They most recently took down the Stanford Cardinal at home, 20-15, on Saturday, November 8.<\/p>\n

After a brutal 38\u201310 loss to Clemson on Saturday, October 4, parents of North Carolina football players and members of the university\u2019s leadership are now publicly questioning head coach Bill Belichick\u2019s leadership and the culture surrounding the team. \u201cIt\u2019s all starting [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Despite Belichick\u2019s insistence that he is committed to North Carolina, rumors have circulated about his potential return to the NFL since before he even coached a game in Chapel Hill. The speculation reached a boiling point in October when the Tar Heels were in the midst of a four-game losing streak<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when The Guardian<\/em> reported<\/a> that Belichick had \u201cdiscussed buyout options<\/a> with North Carolina\u2019s hierarchy\u201d and \u201csignaled a willingness to trigger his own $1 million buyout if he can find a soft landing with another team or in media.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report also alleged that members of his staff were already in touch with other schools expected to be in the College Football Playoff about potentially joining their coaching staffs during the postseason.<\/p>\n
