SZA has spoken publicly for the first time about her online feud with Nicki Minaj<\/p>\n
The 35-year-old performer said she does not understand how the dispute began and insists there is \u201cno backstory\u201d behind their public exchange.<\/p>\n
In an interview with GQ magazine for its November cover, SZA \u2013 real name is Sol\u00e1na Rowe \u2013 added she had never met Nicki, 42, and was surprised by the confrontation that unfolded between them on social media platform X earlier this year. <\/p>\n
She said: \u201cI don\u2019t know her. We have no connection to each other. <\/p>\n
\u201cLike, there was no through line narrative. It was just like, \u2018Roc Nation\u2019\u2026 I don\u2019t know where it came from.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe clash began in July, when Nicki appeared to believe SZA had subtweeted her over a post referencing the singer\u2019s former manager Terrence \u2018Punch\u2019 Henderson. <\/p>\n
\nNicki responded by posting several critical tweets directed at SZA, writing the Saturn singer \u201clook(ed) and sound(ed) like she got stung by a f****** bee.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nSZA told GQ: \u201cThat\u2019s not even my place to correct a narrative that I don\u2019t got s— to do with. It was a little strange. It was very like, \u2018Why?\u2019 But also, you know \u2018I guess.\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nDuring the exchange, SZA appeared to step away from the argument, posting on X: \u201cI don\u2019t give a f*** bout none of that weird s*** you popping\u2026 Lmao lemme go back to being calm shy and meek.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nNicki later escalated the feud by criticising SZA\u2019s decision to re-release her 2022 album SOS as the deluxe version Lana. <\/p>\n
\nShe wrote: \u201cB**** put out a whole new album as a deluxe to an already existing album that was out for like a year or 2 so the original album could break records. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cLike what in the insecure lack of morals and integrity you doing? I thought she was like a real artist? Girl bye.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe Super Bass rapper went on to claim that if \u201cevery song (SZA had) ever done vanished right now the music business wouldn\u2019t even miss (her),\u201d adding: \u201cI\u2019ve been to countries that never heard of (SZA.)\u201d<\/p>\n
\nSZA responded by sharing a screenshot of a text exchange from 2020, showing Nicki had previously contacted her about a potential collaboration on a song called Don\u2019t Do. <\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cNicki. You absolutely know my music and what I contribute cause you\u2019ve asked for features twice to no response. \u201cIn addition to rapping my lyrics on Feeling Myself \u2018cooking up the bass looking like a kilo\u2019? Lol ur having a moment .. im not sure why but be blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nNicki\u2019s 2014 track Feeling Myself, featuring Beyonc\u00e9, was co-written by SZA. <\/p>\n
\nFollowing the dispute, Nicki also reposted old tweets from SZA that appeared to criticise Beyonc\u00e9 and Rihanna.<\/p>\n
\nIn October, Cardi B, who has her own long-running feud with Nicki, weighed in on the situation, writing on X: \u201cGirl STFUUU done beefed with every black woman in the industry like girl who tf beef with SZA??\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBoth SZA and Nicki have each scored three No 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. <\/p>\n
\nSZA released her Lana deluxe album in December 2024, while Nicki\u2019s most recent record, Pink Friday 2, was released in 2023.<\/p>\n
