While Sliwa\u2019s popularity online has been organic, many politicians have tried to implement their own Gen Z social media strategy\u2014for example, Gavin Newsom\u2019s<\/strong> Twitter trolling<\/a>. Some candidates are even trying to parrot one of the arguably most successful online campaigners: Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

Along with the president\u2019s early days of online ranting, his 2024 victory was partly attributed to investing in relationships with social media influencers<\/a>. Today, as Sliwa appears on popular TikTok shows<\/a>, some social media users have begun to make the comparison.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey thought [Trump] was a joke, and he was getting clipped and memed all the time,\u201d Divyne said Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u2018he\u2019s funny\u2019 rhetoric is how we ended up with Trump,\u201d another TikTok comment agreed.<\/p>\n

Khalil Gamble<\/strong>, 27, said that Sliwa reminded him of 2016 Trump, calling it \u201cdiva\u201d behavior to refuse to play by the invisible rules of debate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gamble\u2019s own video<\/a> about the debate, uses the typical format of the Mamdani-Cuomo-Sliwa meme that\u2019s circulating the internet. It goes like this: Mamdani answers a question while staying cool and collected. Andrew Cuomo<\/strong> refuses to answer. And Sliwa says something related to his strange lore. It typically has something to do with his vigilante days\u2014or how he was shot in the back of a taxi.<\/p>\n

In Gamble\u2019s video, for example, he pretends to ask the candidates: \u201cWho won the Kendrick Lamar-Drake<\/strong> beef?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cKendrick, obviously,\u201d he says as Mamdani.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t listen to rap music,\u201d he says as Cuomo.<\/p>\n

Then, in a gruff voice, he impersonates Sliwa: \u201cOn Sep. 7, 1996, I killed Tupac Shukar.\u201d<\/p>\n

The video has been viewed more than 2.5 million times.<\/p>\n

People like to adopt public figures as \u201cpets,\u201d Gamble said. \u201cEspecially if they’re strange, like Sliwa is.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
