Not to mention, there is a bet thrown in there, semi-inspired by the 1999 movie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/pictures\/shes-all-that-cast-where-are-they-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>She\u2019s All That<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved that movie,\u201d Huang told <em>Us Weekly<\/em> exclusively while discussing <em>The Defender<\/em>, which was published on Tuesday, October 28. \u201cI\u2019m a \u201890s baby. I am, in fact, a millennial. I was raised on movies like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4146022\" style=\"width: 798px;\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<div class=\"ratio-based-placeholder\" style=\"padding-bottom:128.28571428571%;\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"caption\"><br \/>\n Ana Huang.<\/span> <span class=\"credit\">Emilio Madrid<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She called the bet one of her \u201cfavorite tropes\u201d and hopes that <em>The Defender<\/em>\u00a0readers will feel the same way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s as popular now as it used to be,\u201d Huang said. \u201cBut I wish for a resurgence, because there\u2019s just so much fun stuff you could do with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bet in <em>The Defender<\/em> does offer another layer to Brooklyn and Vincent\u2019s love story \u2014 and it also lends itself to some pretty steamy moments. Reese Witherspoon, for one, partnered with twisty thriller author Harlan Coben for Gone Before Goodbye, which made her a New York Times [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><em>Us Weekly:<\/em> <\/strong>How did you land on forced proximity and enemies-to-lovers for Vincent and Brooklyn\u2019s story?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ana Huang:<\/strong> It\u2019s one of my favorite tropes, so I am always drawn to it when writing. I feel like there\u2019s always so much tension and banter that you can get from that sort of dynamic, especially with that forced proximity thrown in. \u2026 This makes sense for the two of them. They\u2019re just really fun, but they have a little bit of that sarcasm, playful edge. I thought that would be just a fun dynamic \u2014 and I love a good roommates romance. I haven\u2019t done one in a while. And I was like, \u201cI think it\u2019s time to go back to my roots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Us:<\/em><\/strong> One thing that is very relatable with these two characters is the family dynamics that are also at play. Both Vincent and Brooklyn have rough relationships with their parents. What made you want to explore that aspect?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Huang:<\/strong> Sometimes I look at what I do to my characters and I\u2019m like, \u201cI do traumatize them quite a bit.\u201d A lot of family trauma. For them, I wanted to develop a different relationship that I haven\u2019t quite done in the past. \u2026 It\u2019s like they have this thing that they can bond over and that they can commiserate with, but at the same time, they\u2019re also different, and they can help each other in different ways. If something bad happens to me, if something good happens to me, that is the person that I want to pick up the phone and call first. Obviously, they didn\u2019t start out that way, but for them, they really see in each other someone that kind of sees past the surface level of who they are. Someone that they feel comfortable being vulnerable with. \u2026 They see each other for the full spectrum of who they are, and they\u2019re still comfortable being so raw, vulnerable with each other. Because they are so important to the story, I want to make sure they\u2019re done right. But then, when it comes to love confessions, this is my 15th book. So I\u2019m like, \u201cOK, I have to do something that I haven\u2019t done before.\u201d The more books you write, I think the harder it gets to find a new and fresh way for these two people to basically say, \u201cI love you.\u201d I think those moments were a little bit harder, but it ended up working out.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Us<\/em>:<\/strong> We must discuss the football pitch scene. Is the fan reaction ever in the back of your mind while writing spicier scenes?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Huang:<\/strong> To be honest, when I\u2019m writing spicy scenes, I have to pretend no one is ever going to read it. There are certain scenes where I\u2019m like, \u201cOh, I think this will end up like being a fan-favorite scene.\u201d Usually, it is. But then sometimes I\u2019m surprised by what scenes become the reader favorites.
