Japanese-British singer Rina Sawayama<\/strong> called out Sabrina Carpenter<\/strong> for cultural insensitivities during the October 18 episode of Saturday Night Live<\/em>.<\/p>\n During the episode that Carpenter, 26, hosted and served as the musical guest for, she performed her songs \u201cManchild\u201d and \u201cNobody\u2019s Son\u201d from her latest album, Man\u2019s Best Friend<\/em>.<\/p>\n While performing \u201cNobody\u2019s Son,\u201d Carpenter and backup dancers dressed in karate gis as two of the dancers sparred and danced on mats.<\/p>\n One day after the performance aired, Sawayama, 35, took to her Instagram Story to reflect on the situation. \u201cBig love to Sabrina,\u201d she wrote alongside a clip of the performance. \u201cBut fellow artists\u2019 creative teams\u2026 if we are clearly referencing a culture please can you do so with the research, respect and care it deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n Taylor Swift Starts Windfall of Donations to Tiny Swiftie Who Is Battling Cancer<\/a><\/p>\n She then pointed out the dancers were wearing sneakers under their karate gis, writing, \u201cShoes on tatami is jail.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s considered disrespectful in Japanese culture to wear outdoor shoes or indoor slippers on tatami mats, according to The Independent<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n Another part of the \u201cNobody\u2019s Son\u201d performance that caught people\u2019s attention was that Carpenter notably sang the uncensored version of the track.<\/p>\n The Girl Meets World<\/em> alum sang the lyrics \u201che sure f**ked me up\u201d twice during the live broadcast. The expletive was able to be silenced when the show aired on the West Coast, while the curse word is also censored in the YouTube version.<\/p>\n While Carpenter\u2019s recent performance was met with mixed reviews, she has not publicly addressed fans who may be upset with her. However, she did reflect on her SNL<\/em> hosting debut in an Instagram post<\/a> shared on Monday, October 20.<\/p>\n \u201cSNL double duty was the least I\u2019ve slept in my life and the best reason to ever not sleep,\u201d she captioned several photos from her time on the show. \u201cThank you [SNL creator] Lorne [Michaels]<\/strong>, the amazing cast, crew, and writers for taking me in with open arms.\u201d<\/p>\n
