A lot of men have killed their wives at a certain point. Even though I\u2019m heavily incentivized to kill you, I never would.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, that\u2019s <em>not <\/em>a cry for help from a woman fearing for her life. <\/p>\n<p>Yes, in slightly different context, it could be a red flag for uxoricide. Fiances murder their fiancees and ex-fiancees. Boyfriends murder their girlfriends and ex-girlfriends.<\/p>\n<p>Avoiding relationships won\u2019t help, either. Simply turning down a guy\u2019s <em>promposal <\/em>can see a girl \u2014 and her friends and classmates \u2014 murdered.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the problem is male entitlement. Part of the problem is generational violence. And part of the problem is the convenience and availability of deadly weapons that serve no purpose beyond creating death.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s probably fine that Shepard and Bell privately shared that joke in whatever context. What\u2019s so weird and off-putting is that Bell is then sharing this on social media.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DP7aIvKktDQ\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:540px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-resurfaced-video-has-come-back-to-haunt-them\">A resurfaced video has come back to haunt them<\/h2>\n<p>Way back in 2012, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard took part in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R2_iltp3n0w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interview<\/a> to promote <em>Hit and Run<\/em>, their film.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, she was sharing an anecdote about riding in a car that Shepard had apparently worked on himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first thing I said, five minutes into the ride, I said, \u2018This sounds like it\u2019s gonna break,\u2019\u201d Bell recalled.<\/p>\n<p>In a deadpan tone, Shepard chimed in that he felt \u201cvery offended\u201d at the time. This is not, to the best of anyone\u2019s knowledge, a cry for help.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, people who are experiencing (or even perpetrating) evils like domestic violence will make jokes about the topic during or after the fact. But other people might make them, too.<\/p>\n<p>The telling of these jokes within the public sphere can unfortunately help to normalize horrific topics. We all know that there <em>are<\/em> celebrity couples who have had very real domestic violence.<\/p>\n<p>About 15 years ago, it was not necessarily unusual to see intentionally ironic \u201cNazi jokes.\u201d People used Hitler in memes to react to music videos. But that internet culture gave cover to actual Nazis, and, well, look at our political landscape today.<\/p>\n<p>The issue isn\u2019t necessarily that Bell and Shepard have a mildly edgy sense of humor. It\u2019s the context in which they share these jokes. Maybe the world would be a little better if they hadn\u2019t been!<\/h2>\n<p>Incidentally, Kristen Bell was initially slotted to appear on the <em>Today <\/em>show on Wednesday, October 22.<\/p>\n<p>Following that awkward post, however, she ended up not appearing on the show. Many are very curious about how that went down behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p>She did, however, step out onto the red carpet to promote the second season of <em>Nobody Wants This<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Look, we want to be clear: jokes do not have to define who we are. Also, couples who know each other very well might have saucy or downright troubling jokes that harm no one when they remain private.<\/p>\n<p>And making edgy, off-color jokes was extremely normal in our society in 2012.
