Diane Lane<\/strong> <\/a>is sharing how being a mom to her daughter, Eleanor Lambert<\/strong>, helped shape her performance as matriarch Ellen Taylor in new psychological thriller Anniversary<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you are a parent, you don\u2019t feel like you have to pretend as much,\u201d Lane, 60, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> at the film\u2019s New York City premiere on Tuesday, October 21. \u201cI understand the need for each generation to have its own set of identity that feels as though it cannot be understood by the previous one. So with great patience and hope as a parent, you\u2019re going to be able to bridge the quote on quote \u2018divide.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Lane, who shares Eleanor with first husband Christopher Lambert<\/strong>, continued, \u201cBut at the same time, I think every 80 years, we achieve a blind spot to our own history, which is probably why we tend to repeat it in an 80-year cycle where each generation seems surprised. And yet if you look at history, it\u2019s not so surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anniversary<\/em>, which hits theaters on Wednesday, October 29, follows the close-knit Taylor family as they find themselves caught in the tumultuous rising movement known as \u201cThe Change.\u201d Lane plays Ellen, a college professor who discovers that her son, Josh (Dylan O\u2019Brien<\/strong>)<\/a>, is dating her former student Liz (Phoebe Dynevor<\/strong>), with whom she had a complicated past.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMore than three decades after Hayley Mills wooed fans in 1961\u2019s The Parent Trap, Disney rebooted the classic and produced an equally as big box office hit. The 1998 film, which starred Lindsay Lohan as identical twins, Annie James and Hallie Parker, followed the sisters after they are reunited while attending the same Camp Walden [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As the film progresses, Liz\u2019s radical political views spawn the \u201cChange,\u201d which promotes a one-party government system, and the increasingly popular movement begins to threaten Ellen and her family\u2019s lives, as well as the fabric of the nation itself. Kyle Chandler<\/strong>, Zoey Deutch<\/strong>, Madeline Brewer<\/strong> and McKenna Grace<\/strong> also star.<\/p>\n

While speaking with Us<\/em> on Tuesday, Lane explained that \u201cnobody is untouched by the word \u2018change,\u2019\u201d which is why Anniversary<\/em> felt like an important story to tell.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Change] has been promised by politicians every time we have a voting cycle,\u201d she said, noting that \u201cthe war for people\u2019s hearts and minds and the vitriol that gets utilized\u201d is something that the film\u2019s director and cowriter Jan Komasa<\/strong> \u201cknows a lot about.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a Polish citizen, his country has certainly been yanked around and survived a lot of invasive ideologies, to put it mildly,\u201d she continued. \u201cSo I felt like we were in good hands with [him] here. He knows exactly what he\u2019s doing, and I\u2019m a fan of his previous work. We were his first English-speaking film, so it was an honor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lane certainly has an eye for projects<\/a>, as she has scored an array of Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe nominations throughout her illustrious career. According to the Unfaithful<\/em> star, there have also been \u201cplenty\u201d of regrets she and her friends laugh about when it comes to their choice of roles.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou go with the flow and you roll with the punches and you say, \u2018Well, next time I\u2019ll know better,\u2019 \u201d she told Entertainment Tonight<\/em> i<\/a>n a Monday, October 20, interview. \u201cI don\u2019t mind making mistakes as long as I don\u2019t lose the lesson. For actors, sometimes it\u2019s on film forever and you\u2019ve got to enjoy that too. It keeps you humble.\u201d<\/p>\n
