A killer concept. Following the success of the Scream<\/em> franchise<\/a>, MTV introduced a more long-term slasher concept<\/a> in the form of a TV series.<\/p>\n In 2015, Scream premiered as a separate entity based on murders that take place in the fictional town of Lakewood. Emma Duval (Willa Fitzgerald<\/strong>) finds herself taunted by the killer due to her connection to the town\u2019s dark history<\/a>.<\/p>\n Ahead of the horror show\u2019s debut, season 1 showrunner Jill Blotevogel<\/strong> explained how the writers room approached creating a slasher for the small screen.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cIt really came down, to make it feel like Scream<\/em>, that Scream<\/em> is about a real physical killer and the mask that he wears,\u201d she told Collider<\/em> in 2015. \u201cIt was about getting that meta tone down, the humor and really tapping into the idea of technology and how kids today make themselves incredibly vulnerable with what they expose about themselves on the internet. \u2026 And how we all wear masks by what we put out on social media, with the photos we put out there and the information that we release.\u201d<\/p>\n The producer noted that the TV series was focused on getting the audience invested<\/a> in the core story. \u201cWith this show, we really wanted to start with the characters and this amazing cast and get you to care for them and fall in love with them, so you\u2019re rooting for them to survive,\u201d Blotevogel continued. \u201cA lot of times, in a horror movie, you don\u2019t have enough time to get to know them well enough to care that much. We want to keep that uncertainty. We want to keep people off-balance, so that they don\u2019t know necessarily when, if or how someone might die.\u201d<\/p>\n For the Harper\u2019s Island<\/em> alum, the \u201ctrickiest aspects\u201d of Scream<\/em><\/a> came with the murders. \u201cAs soon as you create characters and you start working with them, you fall in love with them, as a writer and producer, as well. It\u2019s been really hard doing that,\u201d she added at the time.<\/p>\n In October 2016, the series was picked up for a third season which was later turned into a reboot<\/a>. The short-lived series, titled Scream: Resurrection<\/em>, introduced a new setting and new cast members.<\/a><\/p>\n Original star Carlson Young<\/strong> later reflected on the \u201cshocking\u201d turn of events.\u00a0\u201cIt was like, \u2018You got renewed for a third season!\u2019 Then it was quiet. And we\u2019re like, \u2018What does that mean?\u2019 And especially just the way the show ended. There\u2019s these cliffhangers and, I don\u2019t know, it didn\u2019t feel wrapped up,\u201d Young, who played Brooke Maddox on the first two seasons, told Collider<\/em> in January 2021. \u201cBut when they decided to do the reboot, it was just sort of moving right along and kind of taking the entire experience with gratitude, and I even have a fraction to do with the Scream fanbase, which is the best and just the franchise in general.\u201d<\/p>\n The True Blood<\/em><\/a> alum also opened up about what type of ending she would have liked for her character<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m just speaking for myself, but I feel like the other actors would say the same thing, we were just trying to do the best we could within this framework and to make this TV version something different and interesting,\u201d Young explained. \u201cI do feel like there could have been a really great episode where we all die. Like, why don\u2019t you just kill everybody? It\u2019s Scream<\/em>! But, you know, just my thoughts!\u201d<\/p>\n
