The added bonus was, of course, that his mom is \u201ckind of his best friend,\u201d and his dog, Morty, had more people to give him attention. He also contributed to household chores, fixing his parents\u2019 boat, taking out the trash, and bringing in deliveries when they came to the door. He ended up staying for almost 10 months, working from home and spending most of his time developing an app.<\/p>\n
A competitive weightlifter, he describes himself as \u201cnot too political.\u201d He says that some \u201ctrad sons\u201d who live at home stand outside of \u201cnormal masculinity,\u201d as he puts it. \u201cIs it because you\u2019re living at home because of the pressure, you can\u2019t go out, and you can\u2019t live your life?\u201d he asks. But in his case, \u201cit\u2019s intelligent; it\u2019s efficient,\u201d he says. \u201cThings happen in your life, and if you\u2019re doing it because you have a good opportunity, kind of like how I was, and it truly is temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n
For other trad sons, the decision to move home was less of an afterthought and more of a choice. Take 33-year-old Luke Jonathan Parkhurst,<\/strong> who quit his job as a door-to-door salesman to move in with his mom, Patty, in Las Vegas. \u201cWhat prompted it is, I just wanted to,\u201d he tells Vanity Fair.<\/em> \u201cI packed up and moved home and sold my house.\u201d<\/p>\n Patty was entirely supportive of his decision. \u201cWe don\u2019t know, especially men, where their mental health is; they\u2019re always taught not to cry, be strong,\u201d she says. \u201cAll my kids really did launch early in life, including Luke. If any of them needed a reset, I want to be that person that can be there for them.\u201d<\/p>\n A typical day for Parkhurst as a \u201chub-son,\u201d the phrase his mom coined in an interview with The New York Post<\/em><\/a>,<\/em> starts with going to the gym while she walks his dog. He\u2019ll then use her Costco card to get groceries, head home, and cook them lunch. After that, the afternoon agenda consists of lying by the pool, doing the chores, and then watching his nieces and nephews play soccer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
