Television host John Oliver<\/a> is an unapologetic The<\/em> Real Housewives of Salt Lake City<\/em><\/a> fan \u2014 and he\u2019s not above emphatically telling you why.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s one of the best TV programs in any genre on television, and it\u2019s certainly one of the funniest,\u201d Oliver, 48, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> before hosting the Only Make Believe Gala on Monday, October 13. \u201cBecause they\u2019re very funny. They are absolute monsters. They know exactly what they\u2019re doing. They do it incredibly well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comedian continued, \u201cWhat they\u2019re doing is not necessarily a net positive for humanity, but no one does it like them. They\u2019ve advanced the form of the Housewives<\/em> formula, and they will burn out like a comet. You can\u2019t do it this well for this long and survive. One of them has already ended up in prison.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oliver was referring to RHOSLC<\/em> star Jen Shah<\/strong><\/a>, who was sentenced to 78 months in prison<\/a> for her role in running a nationwide telemarketing fraud scheme following her 2021 arrest and indictment.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIn more than three decades in entertainment journalism (good lighting hides my age well!), I\u2019ve met hundreds of celebs \u2014 in interviews, at award shows and parties \u2014 some have even become good friends. So when I tell people about my job, they always want the inside scoop on the stars. Everyone from the waitress [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sure she\u2019ll be the last,\u201d Oliver continued of Shah and her fellow cast members. \u201cAnd that\u2019s why they\u2019re so good at whatever it is they do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, the Salt Lake City ladies are far from the only group of Housewives to experience very public legal problems. Most recently, The Real Housewives of Potomac<\/em><\/a> star Wendy Osefo<\/strong> and her husband Eddie Osefo<\/strong> were indicted on insurance fraud<\/a>, conspiracy insurance fraud and making a false statement to a police officer.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Wendy Osefo and her husband, Edward Osefo, are back home safely with their family and in good spirits,\u201d a rep for the couple told Us in a statement on October 9. \u201cThey are grateful for the outpouring of concern and support from friends, fans, and colleagues. The Osefos, alongside their legal team, look forward to their day in court. At this time, they respectfully ask for privacy as they focus on their family and the legal process ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, Oliver argued to Us<\/em> that the series based out of Utah is by far the standout of the entire reality franchise.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, they\u2019re committing crimes on camera,\u201d Oliver explained to Us<\/em>. \u201cWhat more do you want them to do than what they\u2019re doing? And their commitment to tearing each other apart is absolute. They\u2019re very funny in ways that are sometimes deliberate and sometimes [in ways] they can\u2019t control.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cLaugh for laugh, I don\u2019t know if there\u2019s a funnier show on TV, and I work for a comedy show.\u201d<\/p>\n

So when the juggernaut landed in Salt Lake City in 2020, the first question on many viewers\u2019 minds was: Why? No shade [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Last Week Tonight<\/em> host, who watches the show with his wife, Kate Norley<\/strong>, told US<\/em> that his favorite \u201cplot line\u201d of the series isn\u2019t really a plot line at all, but rather an undeniable ability of one particular cast member.<\/p>\n
