The 72-year-old singer says her \u201cpolitical differences\u201d with the nuns got her into trouble long before she became a pop icon.<\/p>\n
Girls Just Want to Have Fun singer Cyndi opened up about her early school experiences during a conversation with singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams, for Rolling Stone\u2019s Musicians on Musicians feature. <\/p>\n
Discussing her difficulties with reading and songwriting, she said: \u201cListen, I can\u2019t even read a regular book without a piece of white paper underneath every line. I don\u2019t know if that\u2019s because I got hit in the head with a lot of erasers. I have no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cyndi added: \u201cI went to Catholic school, but we had a lot of political differences, so I was asked to leave.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nShe explained she was expelled \u201ctwice, once in third grade, and then again in fourth grade\u201d. <\/p>\n
\nWhen Gracie asked if she had been removed for talking too much, Cyndi replied: \u201cOh, no, no, no. For talking back.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe Grammy-winning artist, who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2025, has previously spoken about her turbulent childhood. <\/p>\n
\nIn a 1984 interview with People, she described running away from home at 17 and later earning her high school equivalency diploma after leaving formal education behind.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cI spent years not accepting who I was. In high school I felt out of step. Everything became unreal for me. I felt there just wasn\u2019t any room for me in this world. But you can\u2019t escape yourself. <\/p>\n
\n\u201c\u2018Why was I alive?\u2019 I\u2019d ask. I didn\u2019t fit in, didn\u2019t have nobody to do things with that I liked. I did them by myself.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nIn her Rolling Stone interview, Lauper also discussed her evolution as a songwriter over her four-decade career. <\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cSometimes you write something, you\u2019re like, \u2018Wow, look at what we did! Genius!\u2019 Then the next day you listen and go, \u2018What the heck were you thinking?\u2019 It\u2019s always like that, but ain\u2019t that what we do?\u201d<\/p>\n
