There\u2019s a lot riding on the Duffer Brothers<\/strong> as Stranger Things<\/em> is about to wrap up its fifth and final season. Whether or not a television series can stick the landing can make or break its legacy, and nearly a decade after the show first premiered, fans are eagerly awaiting its conclusion.<\/p>\n In a wide-ranging Variety<\/a> feature ahead of Season 5, Matt and Ross Duffer and their creative team opened up about writing a series finale that will hopefully please even the most skeptical of fans.<\/p>\n \u201cWe went back over and over and over and over, dozens of times,\u201d said writer Kate Trefry, who has been with the show since Season 2. \u201cThey would start writing it, they\u2019d come back. We\u2019d blow it up, and we\u2019d just rinse and repeat.\u201d<\/p>\n To prepare for writing the finale, the Duffers said they \u201cstudied\u201d notable series finales that they felt were particularly strong, such as Six Feet Under<\/em>, Friday Night Lights<\/em>, and The Sopranos<\/em>\u2014even if the latter was controversial when it first aired. (If taking into account the Six Feet Under<\/em> ending<\/a> is any indication, fans can probably prepare themselves for a real tear jerker.)<\/p>\n \u201cThe best ones were very true to themselves,\u201d Ross explained. \u201cThe shows that are trying to be super clever\u2014I think that\u2019s where it can go wrong really quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n Matt said that it helped that they knew they were writing towards something specific. \u201cWe knew roughly what the end scene was for years\u201ait wasn\u2019t something we had a strain to come up with,\u201d he said. \u201cThere were elements of it that were discussed for weeks, but the core idea of the ending, we had for a really long time.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAnyway, we\u2019re really happy with the way it ended,\u201d Matt added with an apparent sigh. \u201cIt\u2019s nerve-racking to put it out. I\u2019m sure people will have opinions!\u201d<\/p>\n People will indeed have opinions. In a separate feature in Time magazine<\/a>, Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler, expressed concern that the finale might have backlash, such as say, Game of Thrones<\/em>. Fans practically revolted at the conclusion of the eighth and final season back in 2019.<\/p>\n \u201cI think everyone was pretty worried, honestly,\u201d Wolfhard admitted. \u201cThe way that Game of Thrones<\/em> got torn to shreds in that final season, we\u2019re all walking into this going, \u2018We hope to not have that kind of thing happen.\u2019 But then we read the scripts. We knew that it was something special.\u201d<\/p>\n In either case, fans won\u2019t have to wait much longer to find out.
