Keeping Up With the Kardashians <\/span><\/i><\/a>alum Kim Kardashian<\/strong><\/a> and sister Khlo\u00e9 Kardashian<\/strong><\/a> have both opted for the use of a surrogate to welcome children after giving birth naturally to their older kids. <\/span>Keep reading to find out why the Kardashians choose surrogacy.<\/b><\/p>\n Kim has been very open about the reasons behind the use of a surrogate to welcome children with her ex-husband Kanye West<\/a><\/strong> as the SKIMS founder suffered from placenta accreta<\/a> during her first two pregnancies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI had something called placenta accreta where the placenta grows inside your uterus,\u201d she told Laura Wasser<\/strong> during a February 2020 episode of her \u201cAll Fair\u201d podcast. \u201cIt\u2019s honestly what people would die from in childbirth<\/a>, so you have to get the placenta out within a certain amount of time, and you just can internally bleed. So, there\u2019s no choice \u2014 this is so graphic and gross \u2014 but he had to literally cut the placenta off with his hands, with his fingernails, inside of you. And it left a hole in my uterus, and so that muscle doesn\u2019t grow back. So, I could not get pregnant with Saint.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n In addition to placenta accreta, Kim also had preeclampsia or toxemia during her first pregnancy, \u201cwhich is basically when the mom\u2019s organs start to shut down,\u201d she revealed in December 2019. \u201cThe only way to get rid of that is to deliver the baby. At 34 and a half weeks, I had to go into emergency labor \u2014 they induced me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Following the birth of their eldest child, daughter North West, Kim and Kanye opted to use an embryo to carry baby No. 2. When Kim suffered the same conditions during her second pregnancy, the former couple decided on surrogacy for babies No. 3 and No. 4<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Following the birth of her son, Tatum Thompson<\/a> \u2013 whom she shares with ex-boyfriend Tristan Thompson<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Khlo\u00e9 opened up about the difference between the births of her two children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cA surrogate process<\/a> \u2014 Kim knows \u2014 is very hard for me<\/a>. It is really the weirdest thing,\u201d the Good American founder shared with Scott Disick<\/strong><\/a> during the season 3 premiere<\/a> of <\/span>The Kardashians <\/span><\/i><\/a>in May 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n She continued, \u201cPeople do say it takes a minute to feel connected, but Kim said hers was easy. This is not easy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI definitely buried my head in the sand during that pregnancy and that I didn\u2019t digest what was happening.
