When addressing the crowd at last month\u2019s Charlie Kirk memorial in Arizona, Erika described her late husband as a man who encouraged \u201clove for our enemies and love for those who persecute us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Perhaps jokingly, Trump pushed back at the characterization during his address on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was able to fight people that were enemies, and he didn\u2019t necessarily love those enemies so much,\u201d the president said, adding:<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know, I heard he loved his enemies, and I said, \u2018Wait a minute, is that the same Charlie that I knew?\u2019 I\u2019m not sure. I saw him do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The moment of tension passed quickly, but things took another strange turn shortly thereafter, when Trump revealed that he had initially wanted to postpone the ceremony but had a last-minute change of heart.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was going to call Erika and say, \u2018Erika, could you maybe move it to Friday?\u2019\u201d he told the crowd.<\/p>\n

\u201cCharlie couldn\u2019t believe it, actually. He said, \u2018How the hell did you make that turn?\u2019 I said, \u2018I don\u2019t know.’\u201d<\/p>\n
All in all, it was an unusual event that prompted questions about Trump\u2019s relationship with both Erika Kirk and with the evangelical component of his base.<\/p>\n
It won\u2019t be the last time that Trump talks about Charlie Kirk \u2014 but he\u2019ll likely try to avoid such awkwardness in future discussions.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
