\nThe 64-year-old actor performed Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode on a red instrument in an iconic scene in the 1985 movie and while he “wishes” it was still in his possession, he has no idea what happened to the prop.<\/p>\n
\nIn an extract from his new memoir Future Boy: Back to the Future and My Journey Through the Space-Time Continuum shared by Us Weekly magazine, Michael wrote: \u201cIn the decades since the movie\u2019s release, the guitar used in Johnny B. Goode has grown more important for what it isn\u2019t than what it is. What it isn\u2019t is available.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI wish I could claim to possess it, but I didn\u2019t have the foresight to know how valuable it would become.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cSomebody did, though, and whether it\u2019s in their active collection or stashed in their attic or home studio, they\u2019re not speaking up. Perhaps they\u2019re waiting for the statute of limitations on vintage guitar theft to expire.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nMichael noted \u201ccollectible guitars are demanding exorbitant prices,\u201d and the price for the Gibson ES-345 \u2014 \u201cis huge.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe revealed manufacturers Gibson have also “taken up the search” for the missing guitar and want to make a documentary about it.<\/p>\n
\nHe wrote: \u201cEven going so far as to sponsor a documentary film chronicling the quest to find my famous red rock and roll machine.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThey haven\u2019t found it yet; the documentary\u2019s eventual release is linked to the existential discovery and retrieval. We\u2019ll keep you posted.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nThe actor admitted the scene, in which Marty is “giving the performance of his life” when he goes back in time to attend a 1955 school dance, was his “favourite” in the movie.<\/p>\n
\nHe wrote: \u201cThis is my favourite scene in the movie \u2014 obviously. It represents dreams coming to fruition; me doing for me what Marty did for himself.<\/p>\n
\n“What was happening in my life at that moment was no less transformative than what was happening in Marty\u2019s…<\/p>\n
\n\u201cHe literally saves the world with his guitar.”<\/p>\n
\nAnd while he \u201cworked harder\u201d on that scene than any other in the movie, Michael admitted it wasn’t “truly necessary” for the story but was included “for pure joy”.<\/p>\n
\nHe wrote: \u201cThe dilemma for the filmmakers is that the \u2018Johnny B. Goode\u2019 scene isn\u2019t truly necessary. Not only does Marty\u2019s performance fail to progress the plot, it arguably interrupts the plot…<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThe scene adds a time travel joke, shocking the 1950s teenagers with the kind of music their kids will someday adore. It also releases the pressure from the preceding scenes.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cTensions resolved; now let\u2019s have some fun.\u201d<\/p>\n
