The live-action approach to the story<\/a> of iconic doll line has been a long time in the making.<\/p>\n The Barbie<\/em> movie was originally set to be rewritten by Diablo Cody<\/strong><\/a> with Amy Schumer<\/strong><\/a> in the lead role. After the writer departed from the project, Cody opened up about the complications that came with trying to bring the iteration to life.<\/p>\n \u201cI never even produced an initial draft. I failed so hard at that project. I was literally incapable of writing a Barbie<\/em> script. God knows I tried,\u201d the Jennifer\u2019s Body<\/em> screenwriter told Screen Crush<\/em> in 2018. \u201cTo be honest, the timeline coincided with my writing Tully<\/em>. I was really overwhelmed at the time, and I think I was really only capable of reaching in and pulling out something super personal. Look, I think the idea of a Barbie<\/em> movie is super f\u2013king cool and I hope something goes in there and kills it.\u201d<\/p>\n Months after Schumer\u2019s casting was announced, the comedian also dropped out, citing scheduling conflicts. The New York native later clarified that there were creative differences that halted her participation.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cThey definitely didn\u2019t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it,\u201d Schumer told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> in March 2022, noting that she wanted the character to be an \u201cambitious inventor\u201d but it was turned down.<\/p>\n The Last Comic Standing<\/em> alum alleged that the plan was for Barbie to invent high heels<\/a> made of Jell-O. \u201cI felt like I was disappointing my team by not being Barbie,\u201d Schumer admitted at the time. \u201cThe idea that that\u2019s just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, \u2018You\u2019ve got the wrong gal.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Following Schumer\u2019s exit, Margot Robbie<\/strong><\/a> took over the role of Barbie. Greta Gerwig<\/strong><\/a> and Noah Baumbach<\/strong> later joined to pen the script<\/a> and work behind the camera to bring the story to life.<\/p>\n Ahead of production, Robbie teased during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> in 2020 that Barbie will be \u201cthe thing you didn\u2019t know you wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n
