One surefire way to grab an audience\u2019s attention is to cast a famous actor in a music biopic<\/a> about an equally famous artist. Think Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/strong> as Bob Dylan,<\/strong> Austin Butler<\/strong> as Elvis Presley, Jeremy Allen White<\/strong> as Bruce Springsteen, and Rami Malek<\/strong>\u2019s Oscar-winning turn as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em>. \u201cThe success of Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em> raised eyebrows about what could happen when you\u2019re successful with a biographical film,\u201d Larry Mestel,<\/strong> CEO of Primary Wave Music, a leading music publisher and talent management company told Vanity Fair<\/em> last year of the music biopic boom<\/a> in recent years. \u201cIt\u2019s been a big explosion. For many years, artists didn\u2019t want to make films that depicted their life story because they were afraid of how it would come out. There\u2019s a much greater openness now that there\u2019s been a bunch of these films that have done very well\u2014their success, but also how the stories have been told and the quality being as vivid as it has been.\u201d<\/p>\n Further proof of this industry-wide trend: last week\u2019s report from Bloomberg<\/a>, citing people close to the matter, that Warner Music Group (WMG) is \u201cclose to an agreement\u201d with Netflix to create movies and documentaries based on the company\u2019s artists and songs. \u201cOur company has a tremendous catalog: Prince, Madonna,<\/strong> Fleetwood Mac,\u201d WMG CEO Robert Kyncl<\/strong> said at the Bloomberg Screentime conference on Wednesday, October 8, without confirming a specific deal or explicitly naming the streamer. \u201cIt just goes on and on and on. The stories we have are incredible, and they haven\u2019t really been told. We\u2019re like Marvel [Comics] for music.\u201d<\/p>\n Multiple movies about Warner Music artists have already been made (see Joaquin Phoenix<\/strong> as Johnny Cash in 2005\u2019s Walk the Line<\/em>) or are already in the works\u2014including Selena Gomez<\/strong> as Linda Ronstadt, Leonardo DiCaprio<\/strong> as Frank Sinatra, and Jennifer Lawrence<\/strong> as Ava Gardner. And John Lennon is covered by Harris Dickinson<\/a>,<\/strong> who plays one-fourth of the Beatles for Sam Mendes<\/strong>\u2019s upcoming four-part film project<\/a>.
