Whoopi Goldberg<\/strong><\/a> thinks American Idol<\/em><\/a> is to blame for some of society\u2019s problems \u2014seemingly forgetting that the competition show airs on the same network as The View<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n The 67-year-old EGOT winner shared the opinion during the Wednesday, May 24, episode of The View<\/em> while the panelists were discussing the Netflix documentary Anna Nicole Smith: You Don\u2019t Know Me<\/em><\/a>, which hit the streaming service on May 16. Goldberg argued that viewers tune in to such programming to pass judgement on others.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have Basketball Wives<\/em>, you have the Housewives<\/em> of whatever, all the Bravo shows, giving you the impression that you\u2019re doing something wrong because you\u2019re living your life,\u201d the Sister Act<\/em> star said. \u201cPeople watch these shows because they make them feel better. \u2026 I think that we, as a society, love to watch stuff to judge folks.\u201d<\/p>\n The New York native then turned to View<\/em> executive producer Brian Teta<\/strong>, who was sitting in the studio audience, asking, \u201cYou know, I\u2019ve always thought that the beginning of the downfall of society was with \u2014 what\u2019s the name of that show? I always tell you that.\u201d<\/p>\n Teta, 46, immediately knew what program the Color Purple<\/em> actress was referring to, and subtly reminded her that the show shares a network with The View<\/em>. \u201cABC\u2019s American Idol<\/em><\/a>?\u201d he replied, eliciting laughter from the audience.<\/p>\n Goldberg then quickly tried to backpedal by noting, \u201cWell, it wasn\u2019t always on ABC.\u201d The reality competition series first aired on Fox from 2002 to 2016. In 2018, it returned, finding its new home on ABC<\/a> with its current roster of judges \u2014 Luke Bryan<\/strong><\/a>, Katy Perry<\/strong><\/a> and Lionel Richie<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n Despite recognizing that ABC is home to both American Idol<\/em> and the talk show she\u2019s been a part of since 2007, the children\u2019s book author finished her point.<\/p>\n \u201cOnce we gave people the ability to judge other people, I think we ran amok with it,\u201d she explained. \u201cAnd it\u2019s gone out of control.\u201d<\/p>\n The television personality is no stranger to raising eyebrows with her hot takes. Last week, she made headlines by casting doubt<\/a> on Prince Harry<\/strong> <\/a>and Meghan Markle\u2019<\/strong><\/a>s spokesperson saying that the duo had been involved in a \u201cnear catastrophic\u201d car chase<\/a> in New York City on May 16.<\/p>\n \u201cTheir spokesperson called it a near catastrophic car chase. Others said it wasn\u2019t bad, but I think people in New York know if it was possible to have car chases in New York, we\u2019d all make it to the theater on time,\u201d Goldberg joked during the May 18 episode of The View<\/em>.<\/p>\n She continued: \u201cI think their spokesperson referenced something that you generally would reference in Los Angeles. That\u2019s where you have chases, that\u2019s where you can move at high speeds. I think they were dealing with aggressive paparazzi, but I don\u2019t think it was where, you know, you\u2019re watching on TV \u2026 just watching the cars go \u2026 because it just doesn\u2019t work in new York.\u201d<\/p>\n Harry, 38, and Meghan, 41, were \u201cshocked\u201d by insinuations<\/a> that the incident was overblown, a source exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> earlier this week.<\/p>\n \u201cThey insist their account of the car chase was absolutely not exaggerated, and for people to say otherwise is so hurtful and out of line,\u201d the insider shared.<\/p>\n Per their spokesperson, the Duke of Duchess and Sussex were followed by \u201ca ring of highly aggressive\u201d paparazzi<\/a> after leaving the 2023 Women of Vision Awards in NYC. \u201cThis relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers,\u201d a rep for the couple \u2014 who were traveling with Meghan\u2019s mom, Doria Ragland<\/strong> <\/a>\u2014 claimed.<\/p>\n Goldberg, for her part, has gotten in hot water for her on-air comments several times over the years.
