But fans couldn\u2019t help but think of his brother\u2019s family\u2019s update from just days earlier. Coincidence? (Instagram)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nLittle People, Big World fans are recoiling with concern over Jeremy Roloff\u2019s recent post. And they\u2019re not wrong.<\/p>\n
\u201cConcerning fasting for health,\u201d he began on his Instagram Story. \u201cLook up \u2018autophagy.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Autophagy, which literally translates to self-devouring<\/em>, refers to a cellular process. (It can also be a reference to autophagia, in which people consume their own bodies, but that\u2019s \u2026 not the same thing).<\/p>\nOn social media, Little People, Big World alum Jeremy Roloff began promoting autophagy \u2014 which literally means \u201ceating oneself\u201d and refers to a starvation-induced cellular process. (Instagram)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\u201cThere\u2019s a ton of peer reviewed research on fasting triggered cell rejuvenation, also known as autophagy,\u201d Jeremy wrote.<\/p>\n
Just for the record, there is also <\/em>research showing that autophagy can aid the growth of cancer cells, and that excessive autophagy can damage heart cells.<\/p>\n\u201cIt\u2019s pretty amazing that the body was designed to have an internal cell repair mechanism,\u201d Jeremy remarked. Sure? But if cell repair weren\u2019t possible, we likely wouldn\u2019t be around to observe its function. Biology has a lot of survivor bias<\/em>.<\/p>\n\u201cRad\u2019s first pumpkin patch,\u201d Audrey Roloff captioned this photo of husband Jeremy Roloff and their precious little boy, Radley. (Instagram)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nHere\u2019s where Jeremy goes from a valid (if one-sided) scientific stance and delves into weirder territory.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, due to our gluttony (and many other factors),\u201d he lamented, \u201cfasting has become a forgotten art.\u201d<\/p>\n
It feels less like Jeremy is poking fun at a large Thanksgiving meal and more like he\u2019s describing The Sin Of Gluttony as part of the frailty of the human condition. Which may be part of his belief system, but it\u2019s a weird thing to drop into a conversation that isn\u2019t explicitly religious.<\/p>\nJeremy Roloff is all business in this photo. That last bit is true.<\/p>\n
While many people engage in fasting for religious or spiritual reasons or for physical wellness, most people are a little too busy living their lives to grasp for the latest research on cell repair.<\/p>\nAudrey and Jeremy Roloff pose here for the first time as a family of five. (Instagram)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nNaturally, many took their concerns to social media as they worried about anyone following Jeremy\u2019s advice \u2014 and more.<\/p>\n
\u201cDude seriously needs to stop going on about the benefits of fasting until he proves he himself does what he\u2019s pushing,\u201d one wrote on Reddit.<\/p>\n
That same redditor continued: \u201cHe\u2019s supporting a seven-day water-only fast, but never mentions his personal experiences.\u201d<\/p>\nNot a shabby spot for a photo, huh? Jeremy and Audrey Roloff are in Hawaii here. (Instagram)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\u201cI\u2019m scared of how they\u2019ll raise their kids,\u201d another admitted.<\/p>\n
Even if they do not try to do this starvation practice with their children, even seeing a parent\u2019s disordered eating can have a long-term negative impact upon a child\u2019s habits.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou cannot convince me to ANY degree that Jerm is reading peer-reviewed research,\u201d another pointed out. \u201cHe\u2019s taking the words of internet \u2018doctors\u2019 who say they\u2019ve read it. None of them have.\u201d<\/p>\n (Instagram)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nWe here at THG<\/em> actually did <\/em>read some of the peer reviewed research after Jeremy mentioned this, but we are not doctors. Obviously. That\u2019s why we\u2019re talking about reality TV stars instead of wearing stethescopes. <\/p>\nIt looks like the research to which he refers is (mostly) real, but contains both benefits and dangers that can come from temporarily and deliberately depriving cells of new nutrients. Like most things, there\u2019s seldom an easy or clear answer. Biology is so complex that it\u2019s a whole scientific field!<\/p>\n
People of many faiths \u2014 Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Paganism, Hinduism, Daoism, and more \u2014 may practice fasting. Sometimes for holidays, or specific rites. But it\u2019s best to avoid conflating a spiritual practice with alleged scientific benefits. These benefits may exist, but we shouldn\u2019t confuse one for the other.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
