Katie Thurston ‘optimistic’ amid stage four cancer battle<\/p>\n
\nThe 34-year-old former Bachelorette star was diagnosed in February and the following month discovered her breast cancer had spread to her liver but Katie insisted she is looking ahead to the future and is \u201cdoing good, all things considered\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking to E! News, she said: \u201cI actually get my six-month scan [next week], so I feel very optimistic about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nShe added that the support from her family and friends \u2013 particularly her husband Jeff Arcuri \u2013 has been vital.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cYou can\u2019t face cancer alone. You really have to rely on your friends and family. And to have someone who\u2019s your partner, who\u2019s right there with you every step of the way? It\u2019s meant everything.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nKatie also revealed that her diagnosis has made her more patient with others.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cYou never know what someone is going through. I find that I\u2019m more patient with strangers. If someone is driving too slow or grumpy, you don\u2019t know what they\u2019re going through in their own life. And so I just feel like I\u2019m more kind.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nKatie previously revealed she will be taking medication for the rest of her life.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cI wanted to give an update on my latest chapter as someone experiencing [and] navigating stage IV breast cancer.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThe thing that people don\u2019t know with stage IV is I will be on medication for the rest of life. It\u2019s kind of like a maintenance plan, which is great but also can be scary.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBecause the cancerous spots on her liver appear to have “disappeared on its own”, if her next scans come back clear, Katie will proceed with her plans to undergo a double mastectomy.<\/p>\n
\nShe said: \u201cIn November, I have scheduled my double mastectomy. Things are working so far and we\u2019re adjusting.\u201d<\/p>\n
