During a press conference for her new movie, Couture<\/em>, at the San Sebasti\u00e1n Film Festival in Spain on \u2028September 21, Angelina Jolie<\/strong><\/a> was asked to weigh in on how she currently feels about being an artist in America. (The inquiry was a timely one: late-night host Jimmy Kimmel<\/strong> had been temporarily suspended<\/a> the week prior for comments he made on his show about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk<\/strong>.) \u201cIt is a very difficult question,\u201d said Jolie, who took a long pause before continuing thoughtfully. \u201cI love my country, but at this time, I don\u2019t recognize my country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jolie has been toying with leaving the United States for some time. Back in 2019, the Oscar winner told Harper\u2019s Bazaar<\/em> she was living in L.A. only because her children needed to be close to their father, Brad Pitt<\/strong>. (Jolie and Pitt, who split in 2016, share Maddox, 24, Pax, 21, Zahara, 20, Shiloh, 19, and 17-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.) \u201cI would love to live abroad and will do so as soon as my children are 18,\u201d she said. Now, insiders tell Us Weekly <\/em>she\u2019s making good on that promise<\/a> with plans to move after the twins\u2019 birthday in July.<\/p>\n

It will be a new beginning for the Maria<\/em> actress, 50, following her dragged-out, eight-year divorce<\/a> from Pitt. \u201cYou can really feel a shift<\/a> in Angelina recently; she\u2019s lighter and more at ease,\u201d says a source. \u201cShe\u2019ll always love L.A., but she feels it has served its purpose. She\u2019s ready for her next chapter.\u201d Adds a second source: \u201cShe\u2019s very excited for this next phase of her life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jolie has strong ties to nations all over the world. The second source says she\u2019ll likely be partially based in Cambodia<\/a>, where she still owns a property (she adopted Maddox from the Southeast Asian country in 2002), and will also spend time in France (Knox and Vivienne were born in Nice) and Africa (Zahara is from Ethiopia; Shiloh was born in Namibia). \u201cThey\u2019re all very special places,\u201d shares the second source. \u201cShe has dear friends in all of [those areas] who she considers confidantes and family.\u201d (Jolie said as much at the September Couture<\/em> Q&A, telling reporters: \u201cI\u2019ve always lived internationally, my family is international, my friends, my life.\u201d) \u201cAngelina thrives when she\u2019s outside of Hollywood,\u201d adds the first source. \u201cShe loves being in cultures that inspire her.\u201d<\/p>\n

The daughter of actors Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand grew up in Los Angeles and decided to follow in her famous parents\u2019 footsteps after failing to succeed as a model. As a teenager, she dealt with numerous personal struggles [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Jolie is currently in London, where she\u2019s filming the Netflix movie Anxious People<\/em>. (Maddox is working as an assistant director on the upcoming crime comedy \u2014 a departure from the drama-and-action roles she\u2019s best known for!) She also plans to direct and produce films overseas. \u201cAngelina will be back and forth to L.A. for work but won\u2019t call L.A. her home,\u201d explains the second source, noting that Jolie hopes to list her $24.5 million Los Feliz mansion next September. \u201cShe\u2019s ready to dive deeper into directing<\/a> and producing,\u201d says a third source. (She\u2019s directed four films, including 2014\u2019s Unbroken<\/em> and 2017\u2019s First They Killed My Father<\/em>, and has produced projects like Couture<\/em> and Maleficent<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

Her humanitarian work<\/a> will be front and center. Jolie was a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR (The U.N. Refugee Agency) from 2001 to 2012, then served as a special envoy from 2012 to 2022. \u201cShe plans on giving back to communities in Cambodia, Vietnam and Africa, and she\u2019s open to exploring more of the world and raising awareness and continuing her work with the U.N.,\u201d the second source shares. \u201cShe\u2019s looking forward to being around like-minded people.\u201d<\/p>\n

She won\u2019t stray too far from her children. \u201cThe kids will most likely keep roots in L.A. for their careers, but they will spend time with Angelina wherever she ends up as well,\u201d says the first source. \u201cThe children are all very creative and take after their parents [in that] they love all aspects of filmmaking and the arts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The kids are still figuring out their paths. Maddox (who, like his mom, has a pilot\u2019s license) has been working with Jolie<\/a> on her film projects. (\u201cHe has a passion for directing and acting,\u201d says the second source.) Shiloh is a dancer<\/a> and Zahara is a senior at Spelman College<\/a>. The second source says Pax is interested in launching a fashion line; the third source notes he\u2019s also into photography. Vivienne<\/a> \u2014 who was credited as a producer\u2019s assistant for her work on Broadway\u2019s The Outsiders<\/em> (Jolie was the lead producer) \u2014 is looking to study theater. In July, Knox<\/a> won a Muay Thai competition in L.A. \u201cAngelina\u2019s children are a really big force that will lead her [depending on] their interests and where they choose to live,\u201d says the second source. \u201cShe knows she\u2019s going to be very busy keeping up with them after she leaves L.A.\u201d<\/p>\n

Motherhood remains her No. 1 priority<\/a>. \u201cShe\u2019s very immersed in her kids and in their interests right now,\u201d says the second source, noting that Jolie takes after her own mother<\/a>, Marcheline Bertrand<\/strong>, who died in 2007. \u201cAngelina\u2019s mom invested so much in her, and Angie\u2019s doing the same for all of her children.\u201d (The source says all the kids are currently estranged from Pitt. \u201cBrad did have the closest bond with the twins, but they do not talk at all.\u201d) Adds the third source: \u201cAll the kids are thriving. That\u2019s Angelina\u2019s greatest achievement. Nothing makes her happier.\u201d<\/p>\n

In court documents, Jolie accused Pitt of being emotionally and physically abusive; in a 2023 Vogue<\/em> cover story, she said she and the kids \u201chad a lot of healing to do,\u201d adding that she didn\u2019t feel like herself \u201cfor a decade.\u201d) Says the first source: \u201cAngelina is in a much better place. She\u2019s not dwelling on the past or carrying any baggage, and has worked through a lot of the trauma over the years by doing healing work [and] a lot of therapy.
