Adam Lambert<\/strong><\/a> is opening up about his queer identity and the people who helped him become the outspoken LGBTGQ+ advocate he is today.<\/p>\n

\u201cI come from a household of very opinionated people,\u201d Lambert, 43, exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em> on September 27 while attending the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy brother\u2019s opinionated, I\u2019m opinionated, my dad\u2019s opinionated, my mom is,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe used to debate a lot. It was just that kind of a family. There were no off-limit subjects. We were always kind of like, \u2018Let\u2019s talk about it!\u2019 I thank my parents and my family for challenging me to think deeper and outside of the box.\u201d<\/p>\n

The singer, who rose to fame while competing in the hit reality singing competition American Idol<\/em> in 2008, officially came out in 2009 via an article in Rolling Stone<\/em> after speculation about the singer\u2019s sexuality circulated online.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tIt\u2019s officially Pride Month, and while the month of June can feel like one long rainbow-filled parade, it is also a time for reflection and community. Just like Us, many celebs are reflecting on what Pride Month means to them, and how the celebration has evolved over time. \u201cI grew up in a very Christian, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In 2023, Lambert told People<\/em><\/a> that while he came out publicly in 2009, he had been out to his friends and family for eight years \u2014 long before he auditioned for and took the American Idol<\/em> stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was very comfortable and secure with who I was,\u201d he told the publication at the time. \u201cIt was never a secret. During the live broadcast, there was no one asking me what my sexual preference was, and we weren\u2019t allowed to do interviews during the show back then because they wanted everyone on a level playing field.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weeks after the finale aired, which saw Lambert finishing as the runner-up to Kris Allen<\/strong>, pictures of the singer kissing another man quickly circulated online \u2014 an experience the singer told People<\/em> left him feeling \u201cashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was like going backwards in some ways,\u201d he said, before adding that ultimately his time on American Idol and the speculation regarding his sexuality \u201cmade me stronger and informed the kind of art that I wanted to make.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shortly after he came out in Rolling Stone<\/em>, Lambert performed at the 2009 American Music Awards. During the performance, he memorably kissed his male keyboard player on the lips.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember doing an interview shortly after the show and them blurring my mouth as they replayed the clip,\u201d Lambert recalled to People. \u201cBut they showed Madonna<\/strong> and Britney Spears<\/strong> kissing [at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards] without any censor. It was such a double standard.\u201d<\/p>\n
