Barbara Walters<\/a> made her “cry for three years straight” on The View.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Sherri Shepherd struggled on The View<\/p>\n
The 58-year-old talk show host struggled with “speaking [her] mind” at first when she joined the show in 2007 because her religious upbringing lead to her having difficulties communicating as she was “taught to look at the ground” when speaking to others.<\/p>\n
As a result, Sherri experienced “a lot of humiliations” on her early days on the programme and despite the late View creator being “hard” on her, she praised Barbara for helping her to “find [her] voice”.<\/p>\n
Speaking on The Jamie Kern Lima Show podcast, Sherri said: “It was a lot of failures, it was a lot of humiliations. When I got on The View, it was everything I hated to do, I had to do every day on The View. I was a very fearful person.<\/p>\n
“I was not like that, I was very fearful, I was very shy. I didn’t express my opinion. I learned it, I said it, but I was not this Sherri. To be interrupting people, [I initially thought] if I didn’t interrupt people on The View, I didn’t get hurt.”<\/p>\n
\nThe Sherri host noted she had seen “a lot of people” speak poorly of their tenures on the daytime show but insisted it was “one of the best experiences” of her life.<\/p>\n
\nShe added: “For me, it was one of the best experiences of my life. I did cry for three years. Barbara Walters made me cry for three years straight, but what I learned, she taught me how to find my voice.<\/p>\n
\n“I found my voice on that show. I joke, I say, now my voice is deep because Barbara told me when your voice is deeper, it projects confidence.”<\/p>\n
\nAnd the Less Than Perfect star values everything she learned from Barbara – who died aged 93 in 2022 – during her time on the show.<\/p>\n
\nSherri recalled: “She was like, ‘Read a book, know why you’re saying what you’re saying, to defend what you’re saying.<\/p>\n
\n“It’s okay if you fall, it’s okay to make a mistake. That’s what I learned.”<\/p>\n
\nSherri was unsure of “how to go up against these ladies” during the Hot Topics segment but her producer helped her when he explained she carries “the weight of everybody” on her shoulders and should stop viewing it as a responsibility in her platform.<\/p>\n
\nShe added: “Once I realised, you know what, it’s too much, I’m stressing, I’m gaining weight, I’m eating so much because I’m stuffing all these feelings inside, it feels so good to say, this is what I feel.”<\/p>\n
