Amy Duggar King<\/strong><\/a> lived her life on reality TV<\/a> for nearly a decade, but as readers of her new memoir will learn, there\u2019s more to her story than meets the eye.<\/p>\n

In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly,<\/em> Amy, 38, opened up about the inspiration behind her upcoming book, Holy Disruptor: Shattering the Shiny Facade by Getting Louder With the Truth.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI was asked to write a book right after the Josh [Duggar] scandal, and I knew that I had to heal. I knew I had some things that I really needed to dive deep in, just in order to be more whole, and I had trust issues. I had a lot of anger. I had some things I needed to really straighten out,\u201d said Amy, the niece of Jim Bob<\/strong> and Michelle Duggar<\/strong><\/a>, whose family rose to fame on TLC\u2019s 19 Kids and Counting<\/em> and Counting On<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Before she began writing, Amy \u201cdid the work and educated myself\u201d on topics such as narcissistic abuse and other traumas. \u201cI was like, \u2018Oh, my gosh, I could help someone else,\u2019\u201d she told Us<\/em>. \u201cAnd that\u2019s really where it came from, is just the desire to share my story. I hope that it feels like a hug for someone else, that they\u2019re not alone, because I felt so alone, you know, going through everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAmy Duggar earned a reputation as the rebellious cousin throughout her extended family\u2019s tenure on 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On. Amy is the only child of Terry Jordan and Deanna Duggar, whose brother, Jim Bob Duggar, shares 19 children with wife Michelle Duggar. When the former politician and Michelle\u2019s first reality series debuted [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Known to viewers as \u201cCrazy Cousin Amy\u201d \u2014 a nickname she pushed back against during production of her family\u2019s shows \u2014 Amy has spent plenty of time in the spotlight. Though some fans may think they\u2019ve seen the whole picture, Amy said her book is still full of surprises.<\/p>\n

\u201cI honestly think their jaw[s] will drop from, like, page one all the way until the end. I really take readers on a journey. I didn\u2019t want to just share one story. \u2026 This is my chance to, like, lay it all on the line and really tell the whole story and the whole truth and connect the dots,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

19 Kids and Counting<\/em> aired for 10 seasons from 2008 to 2015, showcasing the lives of Jim Bob, now 60, Michelle, now 59, and their children, who followed a fundamentalist conservative lifestyle<\/a> under the rules of the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP). Amy\u2019s cousins followed strict guidelines \u2014 girls were not permitted to wear pants and secular music and television were not allowed \u2014 but Amy wasn\u2019t raised with the same restrictive beliefs, providing a stark contrast on screen.<\/p>\n

The Duggar family fell even further under the microscope in 2015 after it was revealed that Josh, now 37, had molested five girls \u2014 some of whom were his own sisters \u2014 when he was between the ages of 14 and 15. Also in 2015, Josh admitted he was unfaithful to wife Anna Duggar<\/strong> following the Ashley Madison data breach. TLC canceled 19 Kids and Counting<\/em> that year, but some Duggars returned for the spinoff, Counting On<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The scandals didn\u2019t stop there. Counting On<\/em> ran from 2015 to 2021, when the network officially cut ties with the Duggar family in the wake of Josh\u2019s arrest<\/a> for receiving and possessing child pornography. He was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison, which he has tried to appeal multiple times. (Josh and Anna, 37, are still married<\/a> and share seven children.)<\/p>\n

Throughout the family drama, Amy has been an outspoken advocate<\/a> for believing Josh\u2019s alleged victims. While Amy is largely estranged from most of her cousins \u2014 \u201cI tried to reach out to Anna, when all of that was going on,\u201d she told Us<\/em>, noting she \u201cnever heard back\u201d \u2014 the former reality star had no malicious intent in writing her book. In fact, she included a supportive \u201csidenote\u201d to her family in one of the chapters.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just don\u2019t know what they\u2019ve been taught or what they\u2019ve been told, you know?\u201d Amy told Us<\/em> of why the message was an important part of the process. \u201cOne minute I\u2019m at their house, [and] next minute, I\u2019m not, and, like, I\u2019m not coming back. So I think I just want to make sure that what they\u2019re being told and being fed is the truth. \u2026 I\u2019m extending that arm of just saying, \u2018You don\u2019t have to be alone in this.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Josh\u2019s scandals aren\u2019t the only challenging topic Amy tackles in her memoir. She delves even deeper into her family history, revealing her mother, Deanna<\/strong>, suffered abuse from both her father and ex-husband. When asked whether she thinks her cousins were aware of their grandfather\u2019s behavior, Amy told Us<\/em>, \u201cMore than likely no.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m really hoping that they get a chance to read my book, or they pick it up at Walmart when you know they\u2019re by themselves or something, and they\u2019re like, \u2018What is this?\u2019 And they actually get the truth,\u201d she continued. \u201cBecause, like I said, a lot of things have slipped underneath the rug in my family, and not a lot has come out. \u2026 There\u2019s more to the story.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAmy Duggar had some choice words for her extended family in Shiny Happy People: A Teenage Holy War. Amy, 38, returned for the second season of Prime Video\u2019s bombshell docuseries alongside her husband, Dillon King. In the first episode, which premiered July 23, Amy reads the statement issued by Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar after [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As for the possibility of repairing her relationships<\/a> with her extended family, Amy reminded Us<\/em> what goes on behind closed doors isn\u2019t always \u201cblack and white.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of love, a lot of laughter and a lot of hard moments, and so \u2026 hopefully they know that my heart\u2019s in the right spot,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
