But this month, Starz is sending over its other signature show, <em>Spartacus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The series is loosely based on the Roman slave rebellion from 73 to 71 BC that was led by a gladiator named <strong>Spartacus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That story has been adapted before, but this incarnation of Spartacus captured the heart of its fans.<\/p>\n<p>Now that this series is available for a wider audience, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/watch-with-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch With Us<\/a> is sharing the four reasons to watch <em>Spartacus<\/em> on Netflix this fall.<\/p>\n<h2>It\u2019s the Final Performance of Andy Whitfield<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spartacus: Blood and Sand | Episode 8 Clip: A Lesson For The Champion of Capua | STARZ\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z7LHHYyOKyY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to talk about <em>Spartacus<\/em> without addressing the fate of its leading man, <strong>Andy Whitfield<\/strong>. After filming the first season, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Entertainment\/spartacus-actor-andy-whitfields-cancer-battle-documented-now\/story?id=38240987\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma<\/a> and forced to vacate the role while seeking treatment. The prequel season, <em>Gods of the Arena<\/em>, was meant to give Whitfield time to recover his health. However, he passed away in 2011,\u00a0 just 18 months after his initial diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Whitfield was a revelation as Spartacus in season 1, and he portrayed the character\u2019s inner emotional life and fierce exterior with skill and charisma. This could have been the role that propelled Whitfield to even bigger things. Instead, it stands as his legacy. <strong>Liam McIntyre<\/strong> took over the part of Spartacus for seasons 3 and 4, and he was good in the role. But this remains Whitfield\u2019s show, even after his death.<\/p>\n<h2>The Supporting Characters Are Very Compelling<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spartacus: Vengeance | Episode 9 Clip: Empty In Your Regard | STARZ Ep.\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QRrtI_jH8xo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Spartacus may be the main character of this series, but he\u2019s not the only one who gets the spotlight in the ensemble cast. In the clip above, Gaius Claudius Glaber (<strong>Craig Parker<\/strong>) \u2014 the man who enslaved Spartacus \u2014 delivers a bitter rebuke to his wife, Ilithyia (<strong>Viva Bianca<\/strong>), following their estrangement in season 3. Subscribe By signing up, I agree to the Terms and [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The prequel season, <em>Gods of the Arena<\/em>, was a particularly effective showcase for Quintus Lentulus Batiatus (<strong>John Hannah<\/strong>) and his wife, Lucretia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrities\/lucy-lawless\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Lucy Lawless<\/strong><\/a>), the antagonists from season 1. That story demonstrated that their love was real and showed audiences just how far they were willing to go to prove their devotion to each other. The gladiators were also given their due, especially Crixus (<strong>Manu Bennett<\/strong>) and his lover, Naevia (<strong>Lesley-Ann Brandt<\/strong>), as well as the story of Oenomaus (<strong>Peter Mensah<\/strong>), who tragically loses his beloved during the show\u2019s run. This series made the audience care about these characters, especially when their lives were potentially on the line.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Spartacus\u2019 Embraces Stylized Violence<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spartacus-Crixus vs Theokoles best fight scene\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0m9YFwvDfAc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The action in <em>Spartacus<\/em> may remind you of the movie <em>300<\/em> by director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/entertainment\/news\/justice-league-movie-a-go-zack-snyder-directing-2014284\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Zack Snyder <\/strong>(<em>Justice League<\/em>)<\/a>.\u00a0 Like that film, the show utilized slow motion and unusual camera movements during action. <em>Spartacus<\/em> also artfully displayed the bloodshed in the arena in oddly beautiful ways. It wasn\u2019t simply a bloodbath for its own sake.<\/p>\n<p>This unique style of action gave <em>Spartacus<\/em> a visual signature that made it stand out from contemporary shows. However, we do know how the story ended for the former gladiators-turned-revolutionaries. Let\u2019s just say that there won\u2019t be a sequel series, but that doesn\u2019t mean the franchise can\u2019t continue. This winter, Starz is launching a new spinoff called<em> Spartacus: House of Ashur<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nick E. Tarabay<\/strong> is reprising his role as Ashur, and the concept behind the show is that Spartacus\u2019 rebellion was put down much more quickly in an alternate timeline. That allows Ashur to assume control over the Ludus \u2014 the gladiator training facility \u2014 and attempt to rise in Roman society.
