Aimee Lou Wood is proud that she called out the ‘mean’ Saturday Night Live skit poking fun at her<\/p>\n
\nThe White Lotus star was portrayed on the long-running comedy show with large teeth in a skit earlier this year and she has no qualms about publicly criticising it.<\/p>\n
\nAimee told BBC News: “I don’t regret saying it because it was breaking a pattern, which is what I would usually do \u2013 what I did when I was younger and got bullied.”<\/p>\n
\nShe added on seeing the sketch: “(I thought), I have a choice here to go in and be embarrassed about it and just say, ‘I didn’t like that. It was mean.'”<\/p>\n
\nThe backlash to the skit prompted a climbdown by Saturday Night Live chiefs and Aimee is pleased that she had the courage to speak out.<\/p>\n
\nThe 31-year-old star said: “No matter what chaos came from it, I’m still happy for me and my personal journey that I said something.<\/p>\n
\n“I’ve gone into meetings with directors that I’ve admired and burst into tears and not been able to say a word and I think that kind of urge is always to correct, to say, ‘I’m so sorry that I just did something messy’, and actually you didn’t do anything wrong.”<\/p>\n
\nAimee earned an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Chelsea in season three of The White Lotus but is fearful that her rise to international fame could cause the bulimia and social anxiety she suffered with as a teenager to surface once more.<\/p>\n
\nShe told the Radio Times magazine: “I still have moments when I’m really overwhelmed and stressed and I feel it coming back up, like, ‘I could just take back control by not eating.’<\/p>\n
\n“Then I go, ‘No, I have to (eat)’, and I catch that and try not to get burnt out.”<\/p>\n
\nWood explained that the support from her fans has helped during difficult times with her mental health.<\/p>\n
\nThe Daddy Issues star said: “It gives me confidence on the days where sometimes that little demon comes back up.”<\/p>\n
\nAimee was diagnosed with ADHD last year and is also undergoing tests to determine whether she is autistic but has realised that being neurodivergent is a “superpower” that helps her professionally.<\/p>\n
\nShe explained: “I don’t need everyone to understand me. The people that get me, get me.”<\/p>\n
