Donald Trump<\/strong> escalated his revenge crusade last week, successfully pressuring his Justice Department to file charges against former FBI director James Comey<\/strong>\u2014a longtime target<\/a> of the president\u2019s ire over his role in the Russia investigation that clouded Trump\u2019s first term.<\/p>\n But Comey, who was charged with a count of making a false statement to Congress and a count of obstruction of a congressional proceeding, is far from the only political foe whom Trump could use the DOJ against. \u201cI think there\u2019ll be others,\u201d Trump told<\/a> reporters last week. \u201cThese were corrupt, radical-left Democrats.\u201d (Comey declared his innocence in a video<\/a> posted after his indictment.)<\/p>\n Who could be the next target of retribution from the Trump administration?<\/p>\n Former FBI Director Christopher Wray<\/strong><\/p>\n In an NBC News interview<\/a> on Sunday, Trump suggested that Comey successor Christopher Wray<\/strong> could face a similar prosecution. \u201cI would certainly imagine\u201d that the DOJ is investigating Wray, Trump told the outlet. \u201cI would think they are doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump tapped Wray to lead the FBI after firing Comey in 2017, seemingly over the latter\u2019s refusal to bend to the president\u2019s efforts to pressure him.<\/p>\n But Wray himself would prove too independent for the president\u2019s liking, continuing to oversee<\/a> the inquiry into Russia\u2019s interference in the 2016 election\u2014an investigation that ensnared multiple figures in Trump\u2019s orbit. In 2020, Trump reportedly mulled firing<\/a> the FBI director, but stood down after then attorney general Bill Barr<\/strong> threatened to resign. And in 2021, Wray warned about right-wing extremism<\/a> in the wake of the January 6 attack on the Capitol.<\/p>\n Trump, of course, pardoned the violent Capitol rioters upon entering his second term in office, and referenced January 6 in weekend comments suggesting that Wray could face prosecution: Wray\u2019s FBI \u201csecretly placed, against all Rules, Regulations, Protocols, and Standards, 274 FBI Agents into the Crowd just prior to, and during, the January 6th Hoax,\u201d Trump posted<\/a> on social media, repeating an unfounded claim that federal agents were \u201cprobably acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists\u201d that day.<\/p>\n It isn\u2019t clear what the DOJ would investigate Wray over, or what charges he would face, but Trump told NBC News on Sunday that the former director\u2014whom he replaced with Kash Patel<\/strong> upon returning to office this year\u2014\u201cdid a terrible job and we just found out about it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI think a lot of his service was very inappropriate,\u201d Trump told NBC News. \u201cBut we haven\u2019t gone beyond that.\u201d<\/p>\n New York Attorney General Letitia James<\/strong><\/p>\n Letitia James<\/strong> was among the targets Trump listed in a social media post directed at Pam Bondi,<\/strong> his attorney general, with the president demanding more aggressive investigations into his foes: \u201cWe can\u2019t delay any longer,\u201d Trump wrote<\/a> on September 20.<\/p>\n James\u2014who has served as New York AG since 2019\u2014sued Trump and his business for fraud in 2022 and ultimately emerged successful, though the massive fine a judge leveled against the now president and the Trump Organization was thrown out on appeal in August 2025. That same month, the DOJ opened an investigation<\/a> into whether James\u2019s office had violated Trump\u2019s civil rights in the case. That came on top of a criminal mortgage-fraud investigation into James that the DOJ has been running in recent months. (James has denied any wrongdoing.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
