90 Day Fiance: The Other Way<\/em> Season 4 Tell All<\/a> special, Mahmoud angrily stormed off.<\/p>\nThat wasn\u2019t an editing trick, either. He stormed off twice \u2014 without even physically being on the Tell All stage.<\/p>\n
Mahmoud has done a lot of angry ranting and a lot of walking away this season. This time, it wasn\u2019t about Nicole\u2019s clothing \u2014 it was about Gabe\u2019s questions.<\/p>\n
Did Gabe cross any lines? Or is this just the latest example of Mahmoud flipping out if anyone challenges him?<\/p>\n<\/noscript> (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nAll season long \u2014 and for literal years before they ever filmed for the show \u2014 Mahmoud Elsherbiny made it his mission to control how Nicole dresses.<\/p>\n
Nicole Sherbiny converted to Islam on her own. She explained that Mahmoud hadn\u2019t pressured her to do so, but had assured her that their kids would <\/em>be Muslim. If they ever have any.<\/p>\nOn the Tell All Part 1, Mahmoud (correctly) asserted that being a Muslim, and different forms of religious expression under Islam, are a personal choice. That seemed to contrast with Mahmoud\u2019s obsession over Nicole\u2019s clothing, however.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nThe mention of Nicole converting, seemingly in part to share a faith with possible children, prompted a reaction.<\/p>\n
Because in practically the same breath as he said that Islam is a choice, Mahmoud announced that he would \u201cteach them how to be.\u201d<\/p>\n
And when people \u2014 including Gabriel Pabago \u2014 had follow-up questions, Mahmoud bristled at it.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nMahmoud began to give off the impression that he wished that the Tell All special were more of a Tell Some <\/em>special.<\/p>\nInstead of clarifying whether he does or does not believe that children have a right to choose their own faith and religious expression, Mahmoud became angry and defensive.<\/p>\n
The beautiful Tell All host, Shaun Robinson, then asked a fantastic, and important question.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nShaun sagely asked if Gabe \u2014 and others \u2014 would still be asking this question if Mahmoud and Nicole were a Jewish or Christian couple. Those are fellow Abrahamic religions and, for different reasons, many parents who are of those faiths traditionally expect or at least want for their children to share their adherence.<\/p>\n
Gabe responded in the affirmative.<\/p>\n
As he explained, regardless of the faith, he doesn\u2019t believe that anyone should \u201cforce\u201d something upon someone else. Especially their children. And he\u2019s right, of course.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIn fact, one could set aside religion altogether and use, instead, an example like vegetarianism. Many people are passionate about the topic, but it\u2019s a little <\/em>less loaded.<\/p>\nSimply put, if we watched a season of a husband demanding that his wife not eat meat, it would be uncomfortable. If he repeatedly picked fights over her meals, fans would have concerns.<\/p>\n
And viewers \u2014 and likely Gabe \u2014 would also have questions if it sounded like Mahmoud were going to force future children to adopt a particular diet. Especially since he has struggled (at best) when seeing his adult wife<\/em> make her own choices.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nNo one made the vegetarianism analogy on the Tell All. But we also doubt that it would have helped.<\/p>\n
Mahmoud did not want to listen to Gabe, or to any further questions.<\/p>\n
Despite hours and hours of footage of him coercing his wife into dressing differently than she would like \u2014 or scolding <\/em>her for doing otherwise \u2014 he strongly objected to the use of \u201cforce.\u201d As in, the word, \u201cforce.\u201d<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nWe wish that we could say that we all saw Mahmoud\u2019s expletive-laden meltdown coming, or that he had some sort of good reason for it.<\/p>\n
Gabe did mildly insult Mahmoud \u2026 but that in and of itself was only a response to Mahmoud\u2019s mounting hostility.<\/p>\n
We all figured that the fan-favorite and one of the season\u2019s villains wouldn\u2019t get along. But most of us did not anticipate this meltdown.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nScreaming expletives at Gabe, Mahmoud ripped off his microphone and stormed away from the chair and the camera.<\/p>\n
He was filming back in Egypt, with a production crew on hand.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, back on the Tell All stage, Nicole cried tears of embarrassment.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nObviously, Mahmoud has done something like this many times before.<\/p>\n
In the past, his anger has been towards Nicole herself \u2014 for not buttoning a jacket, for having sleeves that don\u2019t reach her wrists.<\/p>\n
As we saw on Part 2, Mahmoud\u2019s anger towards Gabe spiraled into a furious rant over the phone as he complained to Nicole about how unfair <\/em>Gabe was being.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nJust for the record, neither Nicole nor Mahmoud have any children. Nicole is also not pregnant, as far as anyone is aware.<\/p>\n
From what we know, Nicole has been living and working in the US to pave the way for Mahmoud, in anticipation of his arrival in America.<\/p>\n
(The odds are pretty good that they\u2019ll get a season of 90 Day Fiance<\/em> \u2014 at least, they\u2019re set up for it)<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nBut Mahmoud acted as if Gabe had personally insulted real children, instead of asking a fairly simple (though emotionally loaded, clearly) question about the rights of hypothetical children.<\/p>\n
He wasn\u2019t complaining to Gabe, though.<\/p>\n
Mahmoud was whining and ranting to Nicole, who may have signed up for this but truly does not deserve it.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nMahmoud also seemed like he wanted to quit the Tell All.<\/p>\n
That could potentially put him in breach of contract.<\/p>\n
It would also make it so that this obnoxious tantrum was the last moment that viewers saw of him.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nNicole clearly did not want that from him.<\/p>\n
Mahmoud complained to producers (who at least got paid to hear him complain) and threatened to rage-quit the Tell All.<\/p>\n
It took a tremendous amount of coaxing from Nicole for him to return to the Tell All stage.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nMahmoud took a while to calm down.<\/p>\n
In addition to pacing and ranting, he also kicked some nearby trees multiple times.<\/p>\n
This was not only on camera, but in view of people walking by on the street. For some of it, he was on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nWe don\u2019t fully understand why this fairly simple and mildly confrontational interactions set him off like this.<\/p>\n
Mahmoud clearly does not handle conflict well.<\/p>\n
But perhaps there is more to it than that? Hopefully, we will understand better on Part 3, when his brother Ahmed joins.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nWe hate to belabor Mahmoud\u2019s tantrum at length, but it went on for so long.<\/p>\n
He also complained that Gabe had made him \u201clook bad.\u201d <\/p>\n
And then he declared, repeatedly, that he was \u201cnot sorry.\u201d Charming!<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nNow, we viewers know that Gabe could have been more diplomatic with his questions.<\/p>\n
Production very deliberately shows the cast many (but not all) clips from the season ahead of the Tell All, so often they see each other\u2019s worst moments very freshly before they meet.<\/p>\n
Nothing that he said or did warranted any part of this. Was there something else going on with Mahmoud? Is this tied to his anxieties about coming to America? We\u2019re at a loss.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nMahmoud returned to the Tell All stage.<\/p>\n
He got back even before Nicole did. She was still on the phone with him.<\/p>\n
Mahmoud was not in a better mood, however, declaring that he wanted \u201cto see this [expletive] asshole want.\u201d<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nAnd then Mahmoud worked himself up into enough fury to storm off again.<\/p>\n
This left the Tell All stage in a state of discomfort.<\/p>\n
With Mahmoud no longer on screen, Gabe did apologize to everyone \u2026 though all that he did was ask a question and be kind of confrontational about it.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nSomehow, Mahmoud returned, and so did Nicole.<\/p>\n
At this point, Gabe offered a calmer apology for offending Mahmoud. He also wanted to explain himself.<\/p>\n
He noted that his father and stepmother and other family members are Muslim. He\u2019s not anti-Islam. But, in his family, religious adherence is a choice. (As it should be \u2014 what\u2019s the meaning of faith if it\u2019s not voluntary?)<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIt\u2019s not clear if any of that reached Mahmoud. We can expect callbacks to this tantrum in the future.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, backstage, Tim Malcolm and Veronica Rodriguez discussed what they had just witnessed.<\/p>\n
It was shocking. Especially to Veronica, who had previously supported this couple.<\/p>\n (TLC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nTim noted that Gabe hadn\u2019t asked or said anything that was \u201cthat bad.\u201d He has witnessed much more uncomfortable Tell All confrontations. We all have.<\/p>\n
If this is how Mahmoud reacts to some pretty natural questions, Tim suggested, he might be in the wrong place.<\/p>\n
Gabe could have been nicer, but he didn\u2019t cross any lines. This seems to be how Mahmoud reacts to being \u201cchallenged.\u201d That\u2019s not healthy. And Nicole deserves better.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
