Weapons<\/em><\/a> was such a smashing box office success that fans immediately begged director Zach Cregger<\/strong> for more \u2014 and now a prequel is finally happening.<\/p>\n

Chatter about a potential second movie began shortly after the film\u2019s initial release in August 2025. The horror flick starred Josh Brolin<\/strong>, Julia Garner<\/strong>, Alden<\/strong> Ehrenreich<\/strong>, Austin Abrams<\/strong>, Toby Huss<\/strong>, Benedict Wong<\/strong>, Amy Madigan<\/strong>, Whitmer Thomas<\/strong> and Callie Schuttera<\/strong>, with a cameo from Justin Long. (Long also appeared in Cregger\u2019s Barbarian<\/em>, however, Cregger told Us Weekly<\/em> at the film\u2019s premiere that Weapons<\/em> is \u201cnot affiliated with Barbarian.\u201d<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Cregger addressed speculation that the Weapons franchise would be continuing in the future at the premiere.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do think that there is a world where Weapons can expand,\u201d he told Us<\/em> at the time, adding that he didn\u2019t \u201cwant to say too much.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tNetflix has plans to create a Wednesday spinoff \u2014 and Us has some ideas about where the story should go. The series, which premiered in November 2022, is based on the character Wednesday Addams, who was originally introduced in The Addams Family cartoons. The concept later was adapted into a TV series, several feature films [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Cregger continued, \u201cIt sounds weird, and I don\u2019t fancy myself that kind of a filmmaker where I have my own universe. It feels weird to me. But I do think there\u2019s other stories to be told about some of the characters in this movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weapons<\/em> grossed $264 million worldwide and has already generated its fair share of Oscar buzz<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t feel real,\u201d Cregger told Fangoria<\/a> in September 2025 of the film\u2019s success. \u201cLook, it feels great. I don\u2019t know how else to describe it. I kind of can\u2019t let myself basque too much because then somehow I feel like the universe is just going to take it away. But I couldn\u2019t be more happy with how Weapons has turned out. I\u2019m so proud of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zach Cregger Teased \u2018Weapons\u2019 Prequel in Development<\/h2>\n

Amid the film\u2019s August 2025 release, Cregger was asked by The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a> if he had any ideas for sequels.<\/p>\n

\u201cDefinitely. I\u2019ve actually \u2026 it\u2019s funny you asked that. I can\u2019t help it: I have another idea for something in this world that I\u2019m kind of excited about,\u201d he told the outlet. \u201cI\u2019m not going to do it next, and I probably won\u2019t do it after my next movie, but I do have one and I\u2019d like to see it on the screen one day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cregger confirmed that suspicions about a Weapons prequel were true the following month.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is real and I\u2019ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it,\u201d he told Fangoria in September 2025. \u201cThere\u2019s a story and I\u2019m pretty excited about it. It\u2019s not bulls**t.\u201d<\/p>\n

What Will the \u2018Weapons\u2019 Prequel Be About?<\/h2>\n

The prequel will center around the menacing Aunt Gladys, played by Madigan.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was ready,\u201d Cregger told Fangoria about developing the prequel. \u201cI had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.\u201d<\/p>\n
