The season 4 trailer for Fire Country<\/em><\/a> revealed that in addition to Stephanie Arcila<\/strong>\u2019s shocking exit<\/a>, the CBS series killed off Billy Burke<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s Vince \u2014 and is bringing in Shawn Hatosy<\/strong> in a mystery role.<\/p>\n

In the sneak peek, which was released on Tuesday, September 23, Cal Fire is seen mourning Vince after he died in the fire<\/a> that put his, Sharon (Diane Farr<\/strong>) and Walter\u2019s (Jeff Fahey<\/strong>) lives at risk. There was also a glimpse of Hatosy, 49, playing a firefighter, although details on his character have yet to be announced.<\/p>\n

Ahead of season 4, Fire Country has gone through several casting shakeups with reports from earlier this year claiming that budget cuts led to Burke, 58, and Arcila\u2019s upcoming exits<\/a>. (Burke has yet to address his departure.)<\/p>\n

Creators Tony Phelan<\/strong> and Joan Rater<\/strong> spoke exclusively to Us Weekly<\/em> about the most burning questions related to season 4 \u2014 including the decision to kill off Vince, whether Arcila\u2019s exit as Gabriela is permanent, what Hatosy\u2019s casting means for the future of Fire Country<\/em> and more:<\/p>\n

According to Phelan, there was \u201ca real desire\u201d to \u201cnot only shake things up\u201d but also \u201cto be true to\u201d the reality of writing a show about firefighters in the line of duty.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThey are encountering danger so frequently that we felt like to really be true to their experience, that kind of loss is a part of the job,\u201d Phelan noted. \u201cBecause all of season 3 had been about legacy \u2014 Vince dealing with his father and his father\u2019s legacy and what legacy he would pass on to Bode (Max Thieriot<\/strong>) \u2014 it felt like a story decision that made sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rater, meanwhile, teased how the \u201chuge loss\u201d would affect everyone in season 4.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s big and we\u2019re dealing with it. This season feels like it\u2019s about our younger firefighters growing up,\u201d she teased. \u201cSo the idea of what happens to Station 42 is really integral to them growing up. Who is going to take over? Are we ready? Can we do this?\u201d<\/p>\n

The Fire Countr<\/em>y writers wanted to be \u201creally respectful of how huge the loss of Vince\u201d is to everyone on the show. \u201cIt will take several episodes for our characters to get through that,\u201d he added while Rater noted, \u201cBut then there\u2019s going to be some huge surprises about what happened and the fire that will lead us into some cool storytelling areas this season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is Gabriela Ever Coming Back?<\/h2>\n

\u201cFor Gabriela, it was very difficult in the second half of the season for her to be around and see Bode. They just haven\u2019t been able to make that connection,\u201d Phelan explained about Gabriela leaving the show for now. \u201cTo give those two characters a pause \u2014 a break from that dynamic \u2014 and if and when they come back together again, they will be different people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rater agreed that it was for the best, adding, \u201cThis is the season about letting our people grow up. Growing up isn\u2019t easy and the difficult part about Bode and Gabriela is they realize they need to grow up and they can\u2019t do it together right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coming off a multitude of surprising fictional firefighter deaths<\/a> and show exits earlier this year, Phelan teased how that will \u2014 or won\u2019t \u2014 factor into season 4.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to shake up the cast and the storytelling and just have different pairings of people. The show does settle down,\u201d he noted to Us<\/em>. \u201cBut certainly the stakes of what our people are going through do not decrease.\u201d<\/p>\n
