From Titanic to Inception and beyond! Leonardo DiCaprio<\/strong> <\/a>is one of Hollywood\u2019s finest performers \u2014 but he had to wait over two decades before taking home his first Academy Award.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n While the actor was nominated for his first Oscar in 2000 for his role in What\u2019s Eating Gilbert Grape<\/em>, he ultimately lost out to The Fugitive\u2019s<\/em> Tommy Lee Jones<\/strong><\/a>. Thank you to the Academy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Despite\u00a0his eventual win, many have criticized the Academy for DiCaprio\u2019s endless snubs over the years. The California native, for his part, has admitted to being disappointed in lack of recognition before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe truth of the matter is that I\u2019ve been in situations before where I\u2019ve thought films or performances, either mine or others, should be nominated more,\u201d he said during the Andrew Marr Show<\/em><\/a> in January 2016. However, he\u00a0has also clarified that accolades are not why he commits himself to the work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI think anyone appreciates these types of things, for sure, of course \u2014 you know, to be recognized by your peers. I know it\u2019s a clich\u00e9, but the truth is it\u2019s ultimately not why you do these films,\u201d he said during an episode of the Today<\/em><\/a> show in 2016. \u201cYou do them because if you love the art form \u2014 and cinema to me is the great modern art form \u2014 you can look back one day and say, \u2018I did that piece of work, and I gave it everything I could while I was there.\u2019 And if you have enough of those later on in life, you\u2019re a happy artist.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Critic and peer approval may not be why he loves acting,\u00a0but DiCaprio has certainly been recognized by other prestigious awards outside of his Oscar losses<\/a>. He\u2019s nabbed a total of 54 wins and over 150 nominations throughout his career, including\u00a0three Golden Globes, a BAFTA and a SAG award, making him one of the most revered actors in cinematic history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n While DiCaprio has given his all to his craft, he also enjoyed the benefits of being a Hollywood heartthrob<\/a>. The Blood Diamond<\/em> actor has been romantically linked to a string of female celebrities<\/a> over the years, often facing criticism for his flings with younger women.<\/span><\/p>\n Despite his many dalliances, that\u00a0doesn\u2019t mean the Golden Globe winner hasn\u2019t had his fair share of serious relationships. DiCaprio began dating Gisele B\u00fcndchen<\/strong> <\/a>in late 1999 and the twosome were on and off for\u00a0<\/b>six\u00a0<\/b>years before calling it quits for good in 2005.
