Productivity\u00a0software giant Atlassian\u00a0is making its largest acquisition yet to add a\u00a0developer productivity tool to its\u00a0product\u00a0suite.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
Atlassian announced Thursday it has agreed to acquire the developer\u00a0productivity\u00a0insight platform\u00a0DX<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0$1 billion\u00a0in cash and restricted stock.\u00a0Enterprises use DX to analyze how productive their engineering teams are and identify bottlenecks slowing them down.<\/p>\n DX was launched five years ago by\u00a0Abi Noda and Greyson Junggren. Noda\u00a0told\u00a0TechCrunch in 2022<\/a>\u00a0that he founded the company\u00a0to find a better way to understand what hampered engineering teams. At the time,\u00a0he felt the metrics he was using as a product manager\u00a0at GitHub\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0giving him the full picture, and he wanted to build something better that\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0make developers feel like they were being\u00a0surveilled.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThe assumptions we had about what we needed to help ship products faster were quite different than what the teams and developers were saying was getting in their way,\u201d Noda told TechCrunch at the time. \u201cEven teams didn\u2019t always have awareness about their own issues and leadership.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n DX came out of stealth in 2022 and has since tripled its customer base\u00a0every year. The company now works with more than 350 enterprise customers, including\u00a0ADP, Adyen and GitHub, among others, while raising\u00a0less than $5 million in venture funding.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Atlassian\u00a0co-founder\u00a0and CEO\u00a0Mike Cannon-Brookes\u00a0told TechCrunch\u00a0that after trying to build an in-house developer productivity insight tool for three years, his Sydney, Australia-based company\u00a0realized it made sense to look for an external, existing option.<\/p>\n DX was a natural choice, Cannon-Brookes said, considering 90% of DX\u2019s customers were already used Atlassian\u2019s project management and collaboration tools as well.<\/p>\n Techcrunch event<\/p>\n \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSan Francisco<\/span> \u201cDX has done an amazing job [of] understanding the qualitative and quantitative aspects of developer productivity and turning that into actions that can improve those companies and give them insights and comparisons to others in their industry, others at their size, etc.,\u201d Cannon-Brookes said.\u00a0<\/p>\n He added that the timing was right due to the rise of AI tools and companies looking for ways to measure how they are being used.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a0\u201cYou suddenly have these budgets that are going up. Is that a good thing?\u201d Cannon-Brookes said. \u201cIs that not a good thing?\u00a0 Am I spending the money in the right\u00a0ways?\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0really,\u00a0really\u00a0important\u00a0and critical.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n He added that there was a great cultural fit, too.\u00a0Cannon-Brookes said\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0always felt an affinity for Utah-based entrepreneurs \u2014\u00a0DX is based in Salt Lake City \u2014\u00a0and he liked that both companies were able to\u00a0scale\u00a0without taking on\u00a0much outside funding.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n The feeling was mutual.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Noda told TechCrunch this week that he thinks DX and Atlassian are better together than apart and that many of Atlassian\u2019s tools are\u00a0complementary\u00a0to the data and information that DX\u2019s platform gathers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u00a0are able to\u00a0provide customers with that full flywheel to get the data and understand where\u00a0we are\u00a0unhealthy,\u201d Noda said. \u201cThey can plug in\u00a0Atlassian\u2019s\u00a0tools and\u00a0solutions\u00a0to go address those bottlenecks. An end-to-end flywheel that is\u00a0ultimately what\u00a0customers want.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n DX\u2019s platform will be integrated into the broader Atlassian product suite.\u00a0<\/p>\n This is\u00a0Atlassian\u2019s\u00a0second\u00a0acquisition\u00a0this month.\u00a0The company announced it was buying\u00a0AI-browser developer\u00a0The Browser Company<\/a>\u00a0in early September. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
