Jane Fonda<\/b> is mourning the loss of her longtime friend and co-star <\/span>Robert Redford<\/b>, who died at the age of 89.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can\u2019t stop crying,\u201d Fonda shared in a statement to <\/span>USA TODAY<\/span><\/i><\/a>. \u201cHe meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Fonda and Redford\u2019s friendship went on for decades, beginning with their first film together in 1960\u2019s <\/span>Tall Story<\/span><\/i>. They went on to co-star in <\/span>The Chase<\/span><\/i> (1966), the beloved romantic comedy <\/span>Barefoot in the Park<\/span><\/i> (1967), and the hit drama <\/span>The Electric Horseman<\/span><\/i> (1979).<\/span><\/p>\n Nearly 50 years later, the pair reunited for one final collaboration in the Netflix rom-com <\/span>Our Souls at Night<\/span><\/i> (2017). They celebrated the film together at the Venice Film Festival, where their enduring friendship and on-screen chemistry were once again on full display.<\/span><\/p>\n In 2017, the actress told <\/span>The Hollywood Reporter<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0 that she \u201ccouldn\u2019t keep my hands off\u201d Redford when they filmed <\/span>Barefoot in the Park<\/span><\/i>. \u201cI was constantly forcing myself on him. In <\/span>Our Souls at Night<\/span><\/i>, the dynamic of my character to his character was somewhat similar. I just love the fact that these films bookend our careers,\u201d she shared.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWe played that young love just getting married [in <\/span>Barefoot<\/span><\/i>], and now we play old people love and old people sex,\u201d Fonda added. \u201cHe\u2019s a great kisser. It was fun to kiss him in my 20s and then to kiss him again in my almost-80s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n In a 2023 interview with <\/span>Vulture<\/span><\/i><\/a>, Fonda admitted, \u201cI made four films with him, and for three, I was in love with him. Which meant I had a really good time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Redford, however, told <\/span>The Telegraph<\/span><\/i><\/a> in 2017 that he had no idea \u201cJane Fonda was in love with me,\u201d though he shared a similar statement about what it was like working with the former model.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s easy,\u201d he said on the <\/span>Today<\/span><\/i> show that same year. \u201cWe\u2019ve done many films over the years, so it just worked out that way. There was not a lot of discussion, we didn\u2019t have to talk about a lot. Things just kind of fell into place between us, and there wasn\u2019t much more to think about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Meryl Streep<\/b><\/a>, who starred alongside Redford in the 1985 drama <\/span>Out of Africa<\/span><\/i>, also paid tribute in a statement with <\/span>The Independen<\/span><\/i>t<\/span><\/a> writing, \u201cOne of the lions has passed.
