Meryl Streep<\/strong><\/a> is mourning the loss of Hollywood icon and former costar Robert Redford<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cOne of the lions has passed. Rest in peace my lovely friend,\u201d Streep, 76, said in a statement via ABC News<\/em><\/a> on Tuesday, September 16, after Redford\u2019s death at age 89<\/a>.<\/p>\n Streep and Redford shared the screen in 1985\u2019s Out of Africa, a romantic drama directed and produced by Sydney Pollack<\/strong>. The film, based loosely on the 1937 autobiographical book of the same name by Isak Dinesen<\/strong>, saw critical acclaim, with Streep earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, while costar Klaus Maria Brandauer<\/strong> earned a nod for Best Supporting Actor. Pollack ended up taking home the Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture for the film.<\/p>\n While working together on Out of Africa<\/em>, Streep learned a vital lesson from Redford about family and parenthood.<\/p>\n \u201cMotherhood, marriage, it\u2019s a balancing act. Especially when you have a job that you consider rewarding,\u201d she once said, per SlashFilm<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a challenge but the best kind of challenge \u2026 Robert Redford taught me that when they were babies. \u2018They are not your props.\u2019 I really admired the way he protected his family. It\u2019s something I consciously emulated.’\u201d<\/p>\n Streep shares kids Henry, Mamie, Grace and Louisa with ex Don Gummer<\/strong>, while Redford is survived by daughters Shauna and Amy<\/a>. (Redford\u2019s son Scott died three months after birth in 1959 due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and son David died of cancer in 2020.)<\/p>\n Barbra Streisand<\/strong>, the star of one of Pollack\u2019s other films with Redford, 1973\u2019s The Way We Were<\/em>, also spoke out after hearing news<\/a> of Redford\u2019s death on Tuesday.<\/p>\n \u201cEvery day on the set of The Way We Were<\/em> was exciting, intense and pure joy,\u201d Streisand, 83, captioned a post via Instagram. \u201cWe were such opposites: he was from the world of horses; I was allergic to them! Yet, we kept trying to find out more about each other, just like the characters in the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n The actress continued, \u201cBob was charismatic, intelligent, intense, always interesting\u2014 and one of the finest actors ever. The last time I saw him, when he came to lunch, we discussed art and decided to send each other our first drawings.
