It was brief. It also took place just one week before their wedding day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe eloped,\u201d he acknowledged. \u201cIt\u2019s pretty famously eloped and we told no one for a month.\u201d They married on May 1, 1996.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, if you would\u2019ve asked me a week before I got married and said, \u2018When do you think you\u2019re going to get married?,&#8217;\u201d Mark admitted, \u201cI would be like \u2018I don\u2019t know, maybe never, or 10 years or 15 years from now. I broke up with her because I was dumb,\u201d Mark admitted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it was the most agonizing week of my life,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd I just knew I never wanted to feel like that. I\u2019ve never felt like that in my life.\u201d We believe it!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t return any of my calls,\u201d Mark recalled of the week. Fortunately, they were <em>All My Children<\/em> co-stars. \u201cAnd then we were meant to do a bit of PR together. And I was like, \u2018Oh man, she looks so good. Boy did I screw up,&#8217;\u201d Mark Consuelos said, gushing over wife Kelly Ripa 29 years and some change later. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so we do the segment. We barely speak to each other,\u201d he narrated. \u201cI\u2019m trying to speak to her. We both smoked cigarettes back then. And so she went out for a smoke break.\u201d (Yikes! And then we ended up back at my place,\u201d he shared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lived downtown,\u201d Mark explained. We have a day off work tomorrow,&#8217;\u201d he concluded the story. \u201c\u2018Let\u2019s fly to Vegas and get married.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is precisely what they did. And they didn\u2019t tell anyone about marrying for a month. They have also remained married for what will soon be 29-and-a-half years.
