The Emmy Awards have a deserved reputation for rewarding the same shows over and over\u2014but at the 2025 ceremony<\/a>, all bets were off. With the exception of Adolescence<\/em> sweeping the limited series race and The Studio<\/em> racking up statuettes in several categories\u2014but not all of them!\u2014the night was surprisingly unpredictable, up to the moment that The Pitt<\/em> triumphed over Severance<\/em> to win best drama. (Even we thought that AppleTV+\u2019s stylish series had that category in the bag<\/a>. Whoops!)<\/p>\n

Andor<\/em> got the Emmy for best writing in a drama series. Slow Horses<\/em> beat both The Pitt<\/em> and Severance<\/em> for directing. Severance<\/em>\u2019s Britt Lower<\/strong> triumphed over Kathy Bates<\/strong>, the sentimental favorite in the best actress in a drama race, while her costar Tramell Tillman<\/strong> did the same in supporting actor\u2014single-handedly burying a phalanx of heavy hitters from The White Lotus<\/em>. (He also became the first Black man ever to win in that category.) Maybe most shockingly of all, Somebody Somewhere<\/em>\u2019s Jeff Hiller<\/strong> beat the likes of Ike Barinholtz, Colman Domingo, Harrison Ford, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Michael Urie<\/strong>, and Bowen Yang<\/strong>\u2014many of whom seemed thrilled to see Hiller\u2019s victory in the comedy supporting actor category for an undersung show that was canceled after three underwatched seasons.<\/p>\n

Though Severance<\/em> was the night\u2019s most nominated series overall\u2014and came into Sunday having already won six awards at the Creative Arts Emmys\u2014it had to settle for only Lower and Tillman walking home with statuettes. Adolescence<\/em> walked away with six Emmys, making it the night\u2019s crown jewel\u2014and making star Owen Cooper<\/strong> officially the youngest-ever male actor to win\u2014while Seth Rogen<\/strong> alone won four Emmys for his work on The Studio<\/em>. (Adolescence<\/em>\u2019s Stephen Graham<\/strong> was right behind Rogen, winning three individual Emmys.) The spiritual winner of the night may have been Stephen Colbert<\/strong>, who received the night\u2019s biggest ovation when his Late Show<\/em> won in the best talk series category\u2014just a few months after it was unceremoniously canceled by CBS.<\/p>\n
