Austin Butler<\/a> as the music icon, but has now said his latest project on the legend threw even more light for him on his life.<\/p>\nBaz, whose new Elvis film premiered at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, based his new project on 36 hours of archival footage from Elvis\u2019 1969 residency at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. Speaking to People, Baz described the film as \u201ca cinematic tone poem\u201d rather than a straightforward documentary or concert recording.<\/p>\n
He said: \u201cDocumentaries about Elvis tend to be people talking about him: \u2018Well, Elvis is this.\u2019 <\/p>\n
\u201cAs we go through the material, we recognise we have him in his prime\u2026 singing like never before seen. \u201cWe found 40 minutes of (footage) of him actually talking about his life, himself.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nElvis, born on 8 January, 1935, and who died in 1977 at the age of 42, has been the subject of numerous biopics and documentaries. <\/p>\n
\nAccording to Toronto festival chief executive Cameron Bailey, Baz\u2019s new film \u201cfocuses on Presley\u2019s musicianship and his interactions with band members and singers\u201d. <\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cWhat\u2019s revealed is his deep knowledge of gospel, blues, and country traditions, and his instinctive feel for finding the best arrangements and pace for his songs.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nBaz explained the newly uncovered footage in his latest film challenged some younger viewers\u2019 perceptions of Elvis. <\/p>\n
\nHe said: \u201cPeople don\u2019t like Elvis. I was a bit surprised by the level of (audience members) relating to the screen like it\u2019s alive\u2026 they couldn\u2019t get over (how) goofy he is and how funny he is. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd you get the sense of his vulnerability, that he\u2019s particularly empathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nReflecting further on Elvis\u2019 life, Baz said: \u201cI think he always felt less than, and then he turns into almost godlike. So to feel less than on the inside, but godlike on the outside is what makes such a remarkable person \u2013 who can then convert that into song.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cGreat icons are always flawed and they\u2019re very human. That\u2019s what makes them so powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nEPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert does not yet have a release date. <\/p>\n
\nBaz is also developing Jehanne d\u2019Arc, a retelling of the story of Joan of Arc.<\/p>\n
