With the season 3 finale of The Summer I Turned Pretty<\/em><\/a> just around the corner, fans are bracing for an ending that could look very different from the books. As the show barrels toward its final episode next week, it\u2019s becoming clear that the series is taking big swings with Jenny Han<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s original story\u2014and might not deliver the same happily-ever-after readers remember from We\u2019ll Always Have Summer<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Showrunner and author Jenny Han recently teased that viewers shouldn\u2019t expect the finale to mirror the original books\u2019 ending, no matter how closely it may seem to follow Belly and Conrad\u2019s love story at times.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is so much that is going to surprise fans about how much we\u2019re showing of Belly in Paris and the whole ending,\u201d Jenny told Entertainment Weekly<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s not just an epilogue.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Han\u2019s final novel, Belly and Conrad\u2019s reunion plays out almost entirely off-page. After drifting apart, Belly heads to Spain to study abroad and begins receiving heartfelt letters from Conrad. They eventually reconnect at her college graduation, with their relationship quietly rekindled in just two short pages.<\/p>\n

But the show has already rewritten that trajectory in a big way. Instead of Spain, Belly is studying in Paris\u2014a change Han says she\u2019s \u201calways\u201d envisioned\u2014and she\u2019s decided to extend her stay instead of returning home for graduation. \u201cThere\u2019s just so much to living on your own, for the first time, in a foreign place, and that\u2019s important for Belly as she\u2019s growing up,\u201d Han explained to EW<\/em>, noting that Belly\u2019s Paris storyline spans multiple episodes to showcase her personal growth.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the penultimate episode ended with Conrad booking a flight to Paris to see her, a move that has \u201cTeam Conrad\u201d fans buzzing that a romantic reunion could still be on the horizon. Still, given all the twists so far, it\u2019s anyone\u2019s guess if they\u2019ll actually rekindle their romance\u2014or if Han is setting up something entirely new.<\/p>\n

Han, 45, has been dropping hints since before the season\u2019s July premiere that the ending won\u2019t be as straightforward as fans might expect. She\u2019s admitted she doesn\u2019t \u201clike too neat of an ending\u201d and prefers to leave things \u201chopeful,\u201d though she promised longtime fans that the most beloved book moments will still make it onscreen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a couple of moments that people really love from the books that I knew that people were wanting to see,\u201d she told People<\/em>. However, she warned, they \u201cmight not always happen in the way that you\u2019re expecting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to make sure that I was going to really service those fans who\u2019ve been following the story for a really long time,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
